I have been in London a few times in the last couple months, since I can get a plane ticket for usually less than $50. I’ve seen all the usual things tourist go to see.
The next time I’ll be there is in early June. Come to think of it, one of the things I didn’t want to spend my money on last time was the London Eye. Anyone been on it, is it worth it, provided that the weather is good?
But I really wanted to know what comedy venues people like. “The Comedy Store players” at The Comedy Store sounds like fun (http://www.comedystoreplayers.com), but I just saw that the Comedy Cafe has free tickets on Wednesdays, how is that? (http://www.comedycafe.fsnet.co.uk/)
What are your recommendations?
Hey, we’ve been there! Rick and I went to the Comedy Cafe on their free Wednesday night shows and really liked it. At the time (2 years ago) they used that night to try out new comedians, so some were better than others. We enjoyed it both times we went, though.
[slight hijack] The second time we were there, we were seated right next to the stage. The MC started talking to us. I ended up telling him that Rick and I had met online, so he wouldn’t think it was just a “holiday shag” since I was clearly American and Rick was clearly British. People from the audience ended up walking by our table or talking to us on the way out, basically saying the British equivalent of “you go, girl!” [/hijack]
I recommend the London Eye. If you’re more familiar with the buildings than I was, I’m sure it’s quite spectacular. And even so, I thought it was quite cool.
Try going mid-day on a weekday (crowds very minimal), and purchase tickets in advanced.
For comedy, I have to recommend the RSC. No, not the Royal Shakespeare Company, but the Reduced Shakespeare Company.
These guys are hilarious. I have seen both American History and Complete Works of Shakespeare are a wonderful mix of satire, slapstick, and wit all wrapped into a wonderfully produced, audience involved show.
Thanks, Brynda.
What a coincidence, I am going there with a girl I met online, too! Since I’m a little short on cash, I think I’ll go with the free show.
