I’ve always been a major fan of them–that was what really got me into drawing when i was in grade school, and now that i’m a semi-grownup, i’m looking for a few things…
Does anyone know of any college/uni/school with a good ‘sequential arts’ or ‘cartooning’ program?
i’m a big fan of pretty much anything coming out of Fantagraphics Books (Eightball, Love & Rockets) : the company refers to their style as ‘thinker’s comics.’ any other good companies out there to be keeping an eyeball on?
i don’t figure most of you will have any clues but i thought it was worth a shot at least… well thanx.
As far as other books to check out Oni Press is making a name for themselves. Also Image Central has been doing some interesting stuff lately too. Check out The Red Star for a good example. Not quite Eightball or Love & Rockets but still pretty damn cool.
Oh yeah, also check out the Small Press Expo site. Lots of links to underground artists there.
Another school you could look into is the School of Visual Arts, also in NYC. They offer a 4-year BFA in Cartooning that has produced a number of current comics artists.
Alan Moore’sAmerica’s Best Comics* (an imprint of Wildstorm which is an imprint of DC) makes some great comics especially Top 10 about a police precinct in a world where EVERYONE has superpowers.
We get a poster from SVA in my art class every yr and i never really gave them a lot of thought. eep feel slightly stupid now-then
I was thinking of just going for a graphic design associate degree @ AI pittsburgh or something, and studying illustration either after that or just work on illustration independently.
I’m in the development process with a story i wrote a few years back and i’ve got a few pages done for my AP Art Studio ‘quality work’ folder. (unfortunately we haven’t put the school computers online so i havent had a chance to scan them in yet…sigh
incidentally…so y’re also a fan of Fantagraphics then?
(i absolutely adore their stuff and my penultimate goal as an artist is to work for them someday. Dan Clowes is my god. sniffle sadly i very rarely get stuff from them unless i order it (as me town is small and ignorant)–and i’ve been broke as hell since this summer…sheepish)
SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design) has a very good sequential art program. In fact, I went to a comic book discussion panel the summer before my senior year of High School…Dave Sim excused himself every 5 minutes for a cigarette. Literally.
BTW: For some darker humour, don’t pass up Johnny the Homicidal Maniac or Squee.
ugh…wildstorm?? i don’t like them–that’s Jim Lee’s company, right? no offense, but he was part of the reason i stopped liking Xmen…i mean, very talented guy but i guess i just couldn’t get into the style…(i’m a stylemonger when it comes to comics–i like them a certain way, and his is NOT it.)
