Comic/graphic novel folks: new Sleeper trade out today

Yee, just got it- All False Moves. Gonna sip this like summer wine.

I’m eagerly awaiting this book, but I have a gift certificate coming from Amazon.com, so I’m holding out until that arrives. I jumped onto the Sleeper bandwagon late, but I picked up Point Blank #1-5 (the prequel), Sleeper #1-6, and all five Coup D’Etat issues in the last two months and loved them all. Well, Coup not so much, but it was mainly an Authority story. Buying this new Sleeper TPB (reprinting #7-12) is my next “fun purchase” priority.

Ed Brubaker is one of the best writers in comics today, and the art by Sean Phillips combined with that gorgeous muted coloring is fantastic. I only wish more readers would take a chance on Sleeper. As it is, it is truly a “sleeper” hit, with tremendous critical acclaim, but low sales that always threaten it with cancellation. Even though I only buy TPBs or back issues discounted below cover price these days, I intend to support Sleeper Season Two by buying the new singles every month, and trying to spread the word to as many people as I can, comic readers and non-comic readers alike. If you don’t like superheroes (“pervert suits”) or you think comics are only for kids, you MUST give this book a chance.

Same here. This and Hellblazer are the only titles I have to buy each month.

Didn’t know it had low sales. This fills me with dismay!

OMG, that was released this week?! I could have sworn that the resolicit of Out int he Cold shipped this week, and All False Moves was coming out next week. ARGH! Here I have been lying in bad all day recovering from an unexpected trip to the ER last night, when I could have been reading Sleeper.

Pardon me, I’m going to rip off my dratted ID bracelet and race to my LCS right now, even though it’s rush hour.

Woo hoo!

Sorry to hear about the ER, Selkie; hope it was nothing super-bad.

btw, I think it’s the new issue that comes out next week. (Though Voodoo Lou might be able to tell you for sure.)

I’ve just been following the threads on Millarworld, where Ed Brubaker has been dropping by regularly to converse with fans. (I’d link to it, but the board seems to be down right now.) Everyone has been picking up the second TPB since Wednesday, and Mr. Brubaker has kindly asked people to spread the word, and also to report in on how the book is selling in their stores. He has also discussed at great length how sales on the first “season” were slow, but the first TPB has sold briskly. With a new TPB out and the second “season” ready to start, he and Sean Phillips need all the support they can get from retailers, reviewers, and especially readers.

I have no idea if Sleeper Season 2 #1 comes out next week, but if it does, I’ll buy it and sit on it until I get the second TPB.

Per Diamond’s website Sleeper Season 2 #1 does indeed ship next week.

Unlike Moody Bastard, I did not delicately sip All False Moves - I devoured it. What a terrific, terrific book - every bit as good as Out in the Cold, and in some ways, even better. I absolutely hate the single comic format and always will, but there’s no way I’m going to be able to wait for another TPB to get my fix so I’ll be on board for Season 2 in floppies.

Oh, and BBVL - I was right about Tao

Yeaah, my intentions were to savor. Alas, each chapter wound up going down my gullet quicker’n shots of JD. Read practically the whole thing in one night.

Selkie ain’t lyin. It is too freakin good. At the risk of going overboard gushing (again) over this fantastic series of stories, I believe I would rank All False Moves with the best espionage/adventure stories I’ve read. Not just in graphic format, I mean the Hall of Famers- John Buchan, Geoffrey Household, Ross Thomas, etc. etc.

*Voodoo Lou! Did you get it yet?! * If you’re reading this by e-mail, STOP. I have to kibbitz with Selkie using spoilers now. SPOILERS BELOW

Selk, did you see the last page coming?? I knew, I knew, I knew the fucker was going to wake up sooner or later, but they timed it so perfectly that I was completely agog when I turned to that last page.
Very satisfied they gave us Tao’s origin story, too; I’d been wanting to hear it since Issue 1.

I’m an idiot for waiting, but I’m also a poor idiot. Amazon.com owes me a gift certificate for $30, and they don’t even have the TPB in stock yet. I’m going to hold out for them to get it so I can get it for free (along with the second Wildcats 3.0 TPB), even if it takes another month.

I am picking up Season Two #1 tomorrow, when I go to see Spider-Man 2! However, I’m going to hold off on reading it until I get All False Moves. And dammit, that means holding off on reading the spoilers as well!
