Comic Question: How many people has Magneto KILLED?

It’s mostly all there in the title. Aside from mentioning that people who’s deaths Magneto’s indirectly caused (i.e. people killed by superweapons, people his minions killed following his orders, collateral damage caused by his actions, etc. Stuff like that.) “count” as someone he’s killed, too. Deaths he’s inadvertantly caused sort-of count.

So…anyone have any info on this one?

(If this thread takes off, I might start “How many people has the JOKER killed?”)

Not all THAT many, and probably fewer than the Joker. The one time he went to trial was over the destruction of a Russian nuclear submarine at sea, with the loss of all hands. I have no idea what the crew complement of a Russian nuclear submarine is, but we know for a fact that he done kilt’m, because he admitted to it.

He also caused the emergence of a volcano in a major Russian city, but it was admitted that he did so slowly enough to allow for evacuation.

He also took over a small South American country once, in addition to his actions in Madripoor. Neither of these were particularly bloody situations, but I suspect some life was lost, simply because a completely bloodless coup is fairly rare.

Most of the actual loss of life due to Magneto’s actions, I would think, has been “collateral damage.” The submarine’s the only incident I can think of in recent years where he just hauled off and kilt a bunch of people. Then again, it’s been twenty years since I regularly kept up with the X-Men; I may well be wrong.

The Joker, on the other hand, doesn’t keep count. He lets Batman keep count. And he loves Batman for it.

Up through the '90s, I’d have agreed with Master Wang-Ka: Magneto’s death toll was probably only in the high hundreds or low thousands at worst (I count deaths caused by the Brotherhood under his command as deaths he’s responsible for).

HOWEVER, A) He took over Genosha. Thousands, tens of thousands of Homo. Saps. died under his rule. He didn’t personally kill them, but he was in charge and encouraged (or didn’t discourage) it and B) The most recent story arc. The one where he

snuffed Phoenix. He took over New York and given the kind of widespread damage he caused, not to mention all the deaths caused by the mutants he incited, he had to have added an easy 'nother 10,000+ to his body count.

If you don’t count the deaths caused by his minions, he’s still in the thousands.

Either way, his body count is far higher than the Joker’s. The Joker kills one, two people at a time, tops (yeah, there’s times where he kills a small gathering and even one story where the Joker snuffed a small ship-ful of people, but that’s atypical, even given the more gruesome stories from the '40s) and while he’s done it a lot of times, he still doesn’t have the body-count of one of Magneto’s rampages where he causually knocks down a skyskyscraper, say.

I left out a bit: if Magento says to, say, Toad: “Kill him, my minion”, it’s his death as much as Toad’s; using Toad as a weapon doesn’t absolve Magneto of the primary responsibility for the death.

Thanks for the info, all. 'Much obliged.
