In many works of fiction, characters will use a lot of commercial jingles references as part of a joke or ironic statement, “It’s Miller Time!”, “I’m Going to Disney World!”, “It slices and dices!”, “I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Up!”. But rarely in our own lives do we see people constantly sprouting commercial slogans as part of our everyday conversations with others.
Sometimes there are the weird folks who do that though, either yourself or someone you know and I’m curious to see what jingles or slogans you’ve used more than a simple one-time thing.
My family would always yell “Get the door, it’s Dominos!” whenever the door bell would ring after the famous commercials in the 90’s, well until the late 2000’s when those commercials stopped airing, it was just our family in-joke that stuck around way too long.
Not actually jingles, but when my daughter comes in from riding her bike she’ll call out “I’m home” as she walks in. I usually respond “Hey, hey! Dinner!”
Also sometimes when I go in the bathroom I’ll yell “Mom! We have a situaaaaaation!” after I shut the door.
That’s a spicy meat-ah-ball’s cultural cachet has lasted much longer than the actual commercial, which was originally from 1969. My 10 year old son says it sometimes and I have no idea where he got it from.
I admit that I occasionally sing a bit of the jingle from Cars for Kids except I sing “Donate your kid today.” Usually in front of my kids.
My son also likes to sing “Get in the zone! Autozone!”
I don’t even remember the product, but I know it was from the 90s:
Anytime someone says to me “All day long”, I immediately follow it up with “All day strong”
An old commercial for home made pizza (that I cannot find on-line) had the delivery pizza stuck to the roof of the box. The husband’s line, “It’s stuck, Helen”, gets a lot of use anytime anything is stuck.
It was Chef Boyardee Pizza (in a box). I can’t find the commercial, either. Mmm-boy, flatten out the box, apply the sauce-like substance, sprinkle on the “chēz,” pop in the oven, toss in trash. Them’s good eatin.
Life affords a surprising number of opportunities to comment, “Las cucarachas entran, pero no pueden salir” (roaches check in, but they don’t check out).
When I head out to do something, I’ll sometimes say, “Time to make the donuts.”
When I eat too much: “Can’t believe I ate the whooollle thing!”
A couple years ago on a TV cable commercial, one of the characters said, “A bird just flew outta me.” The tone in which he said it amused both of us, so occasionally we’ll just say that at random.
A few years ago, when commercials for Dish Network’s DVR, called The Hopper, were in pretty heavy rotation, my wife and I sometimes amused ourselves by barking out “The Hoppa!” like the family in this commercial did.
