common strain of lab mouse

For a short story I’m putting together. I’d like to refer to lab mice by strain. This wouldn’t be for anything unusual, like mice prone to cancer, or diabetes. I’m just looking for what to call your everyday run-of-the-mill lab mouse strain. Maybe a couple of strains for variety would be good.

Anyone have any for me?

Contact user Mouse_Maven. I think she is inarguably the SDMB authority on laboratory mice.

Stranger

C57BL/6

Rats have prettier names, like Wistar or Sprague-Dawley.

Balb/c :smack:
It’s an oldy, but a goody!

Do you actually call these things “balb-see” or is there some other way to pronounce the strain?

Yep. Balb see. Or for the other one, C57 black 6.
