Say there’s a bowl of popcorn at a party, or maybe in your office, or your living room. It’s there for the taking, not for any special clique or caste.
Would you dare take any? Would you reach in and take some with your actual hands? If anyone else did this, would you be too grossed out to touch it? And if you don’t like popcorn, imagine it’s candy or peanuts or raisins or dried orange slices or something on the dry side that you like. Is a bowl like this unhygenic? Are you better off pretending everyone else in the room could have the plague? Or is avoiding popcorn that others’ hands have touched as silly as a fear of shaking those same hands?
