I get the feeling that I should know that bronchitis isn’t easily (if at all) communicable to other people - but I’m not sure I do know. I have no idea where that came from, so I have to ask:
Can you catch bronchitis from someone?

Basically, it’s going to depend on whether or not the bronchitis is due to a virus or something else. Viral bronchitis is communicable. Then again, it is much more common in kids. In fact, adults with “bronchitis” may well have asthma.
It’s also important to distinguish acute from chronic bronchitis. Acute bronchitis usually occurs in kids, and often follows a “cold”. It starts fairly abruptly, over a day or so, and is self limiting. What is labeled as acute bronchitis in any age group might be asthma.
On the other hand, chronic bronchitis is traditionally defined as cough with phlegm for three months per year, for two consecutive years. It is very often a consequence of cigarette smoking. In a non-smoker (and possibly even in a smoker), it’s probably just misdiagnosed asthma.
Isn’t bacterial bronchitis communicable?
Technically, I believe “bronchitis” means inflamed bronchi, without regard to the cause. I would think that if it is caused by a virus or bacteria that it could be communicated through the air by coughing.
Probably not, although you never say never. It’s similar to bacterial pneumonia in that regard which is also not contagious.
Maybe more importantly, bacteria are seldom the cause of bronchitis. Not impossible, just pretty uncommon.
There is one bug which can cause bronchitis - mycoplasma - which, though not strictly a bacteria (it’s bacterial-like), may be contagious.
May I hijack the thread a little? I’m an adult who gets bronchitis after colds on a fairly regular basis (about once a year, lasts 2-3 miserable weeks). I am asthmatic, though not massively so. I gave up going to the doctor for it years ago, after I was told repeatedly “there’s nothing we can do, just take acetaminophen to keep your throat from swelling”. However, I’ve heard that new medicines are available that can help the symptoms. Is this true, and if so, what can I ask a doctor about next time?
Many thanks KarlGauss, I appreciate your helping me with my question. Would it be unusual for bronchitis to last longer than a day or so in an adult?
Don’t worry - I don’t have bronchitis, you are not my doctor, and this is not medical advice.
Of course!
