I believe the movie cleared up that his name is “Mario Mario.” Therefore he can’t be a mafia boss. Don Mario Mario sounds ridiculous.
Either they’ve all been experimented on by the Koopa Mengele or mushrooms are important members in the Koopa Holocaust. Based on evidence in the Super Mario Bros. feature film, I’m going to say the former.
