Pure Genius. Is there anything this show can’t do? When your clip show is awesome, you win!

I was about to rant about lazy sitcoms that do a clip show in their second season till I realized it was all clips of stuff we never saw.

Best one was the montage of Jeff’s speeches.

Pierce looking at the ghost made me laugh. I also liked the romantic montages with Jeff/Annie and Pierce/Abed.

Were those romantic montages references to fan discussions? I don’t go to those sorts of sites but I hear there are tons of forums dedicated basically to the discussion of which popular show characters should hook up with each other, so I was thinking maybe someone on a community forum made a montage of Annie/Jeff stuff and they were mocking it with Pierce/Abed. If so, well played.

“I’LL BE A LIVING GOD!!!” cracked me up pretty hard.

When I read the logline of this episode, I was thinking, “crap, it’s a clip show”.

But damn, that was an awesome surprise. Once I realized the “flashbacks” were new material centered around past episodes, I was damn near giddy. I’ll be watching that episode again… it was packed with laughs and genius.

Loved Abed’s t-shirt in this one; a funny take on Pac Man.

Troy’s meta freakout.

Pierce: “I’LL BE A LIVING GOD!!!”

Chang being Chang… with a monkey (Annie’s Boobs), vaseline, and a ventilation duct.

And of course Jeff’s spliced speech.

That must’ve been a huge production cost to have to shoot so many different locations and circumstances for all those vignettes.

Love this show.

Damn it. Here in Oregon the F***ing Blazers game was shown instead. It even ran over the new Office.

Gah! I flipped on the television and saw a basketball game on and assumed there wasn’t an episode this week. Frickin’ basketball. Guess I’ll have to watch on Hulu sometime this week then.

It’s rare I watch Hulu, but I have a reason now.

What a great episode!!! I was rolling on the floor with Abed and Pierce bit. The animation at the end was just great wrap-up.

Does anyone know what that cape was in reference to? Jeff said it won’t last three weeks, and then Abed said “Six seasons and a movie”. And was that a failed magic trick?

Isn’t that from Kickpuncher, or whatever the show is Troy and Abed love so much?

How about the St. Patricks Day raft trip with the leprechaun outfits? It was just bizarre to see Abed appear (“Remember our St. Patricks Day adventure?”) in his memory of seeing Jeff and Britta in his room, while he was wearing a life jacket and green hat. Which then made sense later, when you saw the whole gang with a deflated raft, all wearing life jackets and green hats (Troy: “If you saw the same cartoons I did, you would know poking a hole in a raft always makes it go fast.”).

I kinda wish I’d seen a lot of those episodes. The Old West town … the haunted house … the free Caesar Salad day …

Chang: “We had some good times, didn’t we?” (Cut to flashback of the monkey pounding on his head).

The Cape

The endless parade of Dean Pelton’s costumes was worth the whole episode alone.

The creators of this show are outstanding. I don’t recall anyone ever making a clip show out of new material. As you note, the costs must have been extraordinary. The whole thing must have taken a huge amount of effort.

What show has ever put more time, work and creativity into a clip show than a regular episode?

I cracked up at “Six seasons and a movie!!” as Abed swooped away. Oh, hindsight.

…this one in particular:

Dan Harmon tweeted the maker of the video about three hours prior to the show to make sure she watched it. (Same music and everything!) He also made it clear later they weren’t making fun of her, it was a homage.

Exactly - I read the description on my DVR, I thought, “Crap - A clip show; they’re better than this.”

You know what?

They are.

This was the perfect not-a-clip-show-clip-show.

My wife had never watched the show before and immediately said, “Oh, no. A clip show.” I was in hysterics and I tried to explain to her that they were clips that never actually existed and from show that never aired. Just a brilliant concept to begin with.

Earlier in the episode, Abed and Troy are getting ready to watch the premiere episode of The Cape when Britta comes in and changes the channel. Later, Abed, dressed as “the Cape,” knocks Jeff’s food to the floor, so Jeff tries to harsh Abed’s mellow by predicting the show won’t last three weeks.

The TV show “The Cape.” (they showed Troy & Abed watching the premiere and Britta changing the channel to riots somewhere) It was a mid-season replacement, originally scheduled for 13 episodes, cut to 10 episodes, and the finale was shown only on the internet.

Anyway, I loved the Glee parody & the insane asylum & the “Dean” montage & the idea of doing a clip show of episodes that never happened.

I was laughing too hard to hear what Abed said as he ran away as The Cape after he knocked Jeff’s food on the floor. Hysterical.

I think every gag worked for me in this, and I’m sure I missed plenty. Gonna watch again now! (And the dean steals every scene he’s in for me.)
