Community 5.10 "Advanced Advanced Dungeons & Dragons" 3/20/14

Doesn’t measure up to the first D&D episode, which is my favorite Community episode. Also felt kind of rushed, like it would’ve worked a lot better as a two parter. But still funny. The interrogation scene was definitely the highlight, but a lot of nice little touches. Pelton/Jim Rash may be the highlight of the show now that Donald Glover is gone, although Dani Pudi is up there.

What’s odd is that there’ve been a lot of little shotouts to Dan Harmon’s podcast/live show Harmontown this season. He even put Spencer, the show’s actual dungeonmaster, in as a character the previous week as Annie’s brother. But he played no role in the D&D episode, which was odd. They almost worked in a “I fire… TWO arrows” moment into the episode, but not quite. And no RAY OF FROOOOOOOOOST.

I guess that stuff would only go noticed by about 2% of the viewer base, but I was waiting the whole time for stuff like that.

I am surprised that people enjoyed this. This was by far the worst episode of the season and there’s already been a couple duds. The wonderful return to form from the beginning of the season has faded.

I don’t see the motivation for the characters. Why on Earth would Jeff, for example, agree to play this game?

It really dragged. I had a hard time keeping my finger off the FF button.

Of course David Cross is one of my least favorite “comedians”. He’s just a self-important jerk on and off camera.

One thing that is getting me down is that [del]Mike[/del] Hickey (Jonathan Banks) started off great and is now spiraling down into generic sitcom blandness. I think it’s time to wrap up his story line and move on if they’re going to keep being so sappy with him.

Chang’s storyline died long ago. He serves no purpose anymore.
