I’ve been seeing a lot of ads on the SDMB for Community Book Solutions (www.communitybooksolutions.com), and so I finally clicked on it-- I guess because it achieved some sort of saturation of my subconscious. At first it sounded kind of neat and big-hearted: “We pick up books at the location of your choice.” “Don’t throw them out!.. We’ll pick them up!” “We’ll pick them up at your home or office - FREE OF CHARGE.” “We accept all types of books…” Well great! For charity, right? What nice guys. But wait…the entire website says nothing about what actually happens to the books. The answer to “Why give us books?” is “they won’t be thrown out”. :dubious: The company, as noted at the bottom of the page, is for-profit. Obviously this is a mildly sleazy company, but what’s the point? Is it actually profitable to con people into having you pick up their crappy old books? I guess it’s getting something for nothing, but driving 20 miles to pick up some do-gooder’s yellowing copy of “277 Secrets Your Snake Wants You to Know: Unusual and Useful Information for Snake Owners and Snake Lovers” hardly seems likely to make the schemers millionaires.
I guess I just posted this because I found the whole thing really funny; that something could be mildly convincing yet so hilariously full of holes on closer inspection. And that there’s someone out there who thinks they’re really clever because of this.
