i know communities like Irvine often have massive, city-organized garage/yard/estate sales. anyone know of an online calendar for such events?
i am in need of several pieces of furniture, a large-ish canvas tent and such. but i don’t have the $$$ for new stuff. i’ve been dilligently hitting the thrift stores without any luck. any suggestions? i’ve googled it, but i can’t seem to find the right search string that yields any results.

Not to be a smartalec, and you’re certainly welcome to post the question here (subject to Mod. discretion, of course), but wouldn’t you be farther ahead asking this on some local/regional board, of which there must be a few?
tried that. this is a last ditch attempt before i hop in my car and drive about orange county aimlessly on random saturday mornings. besides, it’s been my experience that factual questions are answered here 9 times of 10, and in a more concise manner.
I can’t specifically answer your question as I have never heard of anything like this in my home town of Lake Forest, but if you havent already you could try looking on craigslist.org
I’ve only lived in Irvine for 3 years but I’ve never seen signs for anything like that. I got most of my furniture through Craig’s List or the dumpster. People throw out really good stuff here.
I just found the Orange County Register’s Garage Sale section. It’s not updated regularly, and it looks like some great sales in Irvine have just passed, but if you watch it you should be able to find some good sales. If you don’t mind waiting, I’d recommend that you go to the UCI livejournal community and asking there after school gets out. A lot of students here are transplants and will throw out/give away for cheap perfectly good furniture. As I said, all of the stuff I own was either left behind by ex-roommates, pulled out of dumpsters around UCI, or gotten free from Craig’s List.
I like this sight. It list auctions and estate sales by state and you can search for specific items that are listed in thier flyers.
