"Community" (new NBC show)

Speaking of which, how old is Alison Brie in real life? I can’t seem to find out her age.

Her age isn’t listed in any of her PR stuff, but she graduated high school in 2001, so she’s probably 26 or 27 years old.

I’m positive I’m not the only one who saw yesterday’s (11/13) episode. What’d ya think?

I thought the debate team plot was okay, but I really enjoyed Pierce and his hypnotism. Why is slapstick still so funny?

I’m almost disappointed they didn’t work in Shirley and the werewolf.

“He hates me, but he caught me. Man is GOOD!”

“He’s horny, so he dropped him. Man is EVIL!”

Classic.

For me, I would have used a chunk of my time defining “good” and “evil” in such a way as to support my position.

(The werewolf was wossname the Debate Team coach. Celebrating and a full moon. He probably started hitting on Shirley and she didn’t hit back until she was cornered.)

I liked Abed’s films. Who played Troy in them? I believe he was a famous rapper at one point.

He looked like Coolio.

Great episode I though.

Wow that girl who likes Troy (forget her name) is gorgeous without her hair pulled back in the middle. Was that even the same girl?

Yeah what about the werewolf?

I don’t think the rapper was Coolio, I think he just had Coolio’s hair.

This was the best episode I’ve seen so far. I get the same feeling watching this show as I did when I first started watching “Scrubs” and “My Name Earl”. I don’t see me watching past it past it’s third season, if that. The premise will wear thin IMHO. It’s a nice detraction, but does it have legs?

This is without a doubt my new favorite show. I like every single character.

Nice little E!-channel smackdown, and a fun ep overall (though Abed was more of a plot catalyst without actually appearing much). And Chevy still has his pratfall chops, and while I’m glad he doesn’t do it often, the drumkit business was priceless.

And yet another great username/post combo.

I loved the end credit sequence, where they were filming a version of an earlier end credit sequence.

Heh.

Seriously though, I see this show being great at first, but getting old fast. I hope I’m wrong. Maybe if the show were only meant to air for four years, because it would be weird watching this beyond that point, for both keeping it fresh, and keeping all the characters together believably. I admit, the series does a pretty good job at openly acknowledging their formulaic ways to the point of surrealism, (in which case, sure there could be a fifth season and Abed can point it out to us), but do you really think people will care after that long? I bet it will get ‘sappy’ too.

I honestly wouldn’t have a problem with it airing for only four years. Part of the problem with American TV is the tendency to run shows into the ground to try get every last cent from it. I like the tendency of British shows to wrap things up when the central concept has run its course. Stories aren’t meant to go on forever.

For instance, Friends was a good show I have to admit, but I remember it as a terrible show, mainly because after four seasons the writers ran out of material and resorted to making the characters insultingly stupid and shallow in order to come up with situations. It’d have been better to wrap it up with a satisfying and mature ending and move on to somehting else. But TV is a business before it is an art.

Likewise, I loved Arrested Development, but I’m not heartbroken that it only lasted three seasons (and a movie). It was good while it lasted, but all great art is finite.

As a fan of “The Guild,” the combination of Vork on Glee and Zaboo on Community filled me with joy.

Lejon Stewart played Abed’s Troy (that’s how they were credited in the closing credits, “Abed’s [character]”) and if he’s familiar at all it’s probably as a pirate in two of the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

“By the way Jeff, I think your shirt’s trying to get out of your pants.” Hilarious.

I think this was the first time I’d seen Allison Brie with her hair all the way down, ever. Very pretty!

I don’t know the policy on spoilers is for this particular thread, so the spoiler tags are hiding discussion of Annie and Jeff’s interactions this week:

I would have liked the Annie/Jeff thing that was going on if Annie was Allison Brie’s age. Since Annie’s 18, I didn’t like it. The age difference coupled with the general idolization of Jeff makes it skeevy. Jeff could very easily- and perhaps accidentally- take advantage of Annie.

I agree. I was like, “Dude, she’s only 18, and just out of high school. That’s kinda creepy.”

I don’t think spoilers are needed after the episode airs. It’s not like this is a serial drama or anything.

I think Jeff’s reactions are very realistic for a man in his mid thirties who is suddenly dealing with an attractive young woman. Hence the awkwardness and the pats on the head. Besides, while Annie may find Jeff attractive, she’s still holding a candle for Troy.

Yes, I agree with you.
I wish we did that, it would do wonders for the lasting appeal of the show. I actually think AD ended well.

I find myself in the minority again. It wasn’t a bad episode, but wasn’t great. I am not really a fan of slapstick. The show is losing some of its pizazz.
