"Community" (new NBC show)

With the exception that I like him IN Tenacious D. Everything else he’s ever done, loathe.

But he was in his element doing Tenacious D (specifically the HBO series, less so their later stuff).

That was the point, though, right? That Black’s whole bit is just frankly annoying and would alienate anyone near him if he was just a guy in class/study group. And that the “cool group” at a community college would be so far from cool that they would just love him.

I didn’t know his name but I recognized him from Mr. Show and Conan O’Brien, and I recognized Owen Wilson of course. Was the Asian actress anybody famous? (It wasn’t Lucy Liu was it? Not “racially profiling” like the dean [“it only went out to all the black students and a French guy named LeBron”] I didn’t record and she was only on screen for a second.)

I never thought I’d say this, but Chevy Chase needs a bigger part. Not every episode maybe, but they really need to develop Pierce a bit.

I thought the Jack Black bit was a bit much as well until Owen Wilson showed up- I thought it really worked then. It seemed much more believable somehow with the cool Owen allowing Jack into the club- also with the fact that everyone on the show is overacting their character too much (Shirley, Annie, Troy) that bringing on two enormous “overactors” really works. I was trying to figure out two other people who they could have invited to be caricatures of themselves to the same effect and I think Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell are the other two.

I thought Jack Black was totally annoying but I loved it when Owen Wilson showed up! Hilarious!

Just caught it (thanks DVR). I absolutely love the meta-humor, especially in the beginning when Jack Black talks about adding one more person may ruin the rhythm of the group and in the middle of his sentence the opening credits play, only for the show to continue right where Black left off. Utterly hilarious and brilliant writing. Usually it is Abed, being somewhat of the narrator of group dynamics and he did it again, by doing the Jeff = Hawkeye comparison (the martini machine was awesome as well).

They found a totally annoying actor to play a totally annoying character which is one totally annoying too many.

The MAS*H subplot worked, but the show as a whole was the season low.

They need to get back to friction in the group. I’m sure that somewhere up this thread we talked about the danger of having a guest villain of the week.

Maybe Jack lack didn’t really work, but the payoff with Owen Wilson was pretty good, and there were some other decent little bits and throwaways throughout the episode. If this was an off episode for the show, then it’s still pretty damn good. Even the worst episode is still better than bilge like Til Death.

I think it has to be said that the show has, on balance, been pretty entertaining, worth watching and has a base level consistency that never dips below tolerable. It’s best moments are outstanding (the meta jokes as well as the joke jokes).

It kind of reminds me of Arrested Development, not in terms of stories (obviolusly, the show are nothing alike in that regard), but in terms of wit, and wordplay and self-winking.
Parks and Recreation has gotten a lot better as well. Thursday nights are currently as solid as they’ve been since the Seinfeld says.

Yet the Annie-on-Brita cheerleader fight was the highlight of the season. Odd.

If you ever make it to Salt Lake, you have a cold beer coming for reminding me of that scene…

My God, that was hot.

Eh. I didn’t love this one. I did enjoy the meta joke with the intro cutting off Jack Black, but I think that was the only time I laughed during the entire episode.

I guess I’m the only one here who really likes Jack Black so naturally I enjoyed this episode. It was especially funny how they introduced him. When they have a group hug he tentatively walks up as if he wants to be a part of it, then his face is in one of the reaction shots, then a few seconds later the characters realize he’s there. I didn’t notice it the first time.

Why was I not informed about this show?! Put me on whatever newsletter list that notifies people of TV shows not designed for retards.

Best comedy since Arrested Development, although not nearly as good. Probably is too limited in the premises (and probably on too conservative a network) to go all the places AD went and will probably flame out sooner, but in the meantime I’m enjoying it a lot.

With the re-introduction of the uber-hottie Professor Slater character, I will say again that Community has the most attractive three women in a single cast of any television show I can think of…

To show just how shallow and/or lonely I am, I would personally rank Annie (Alison Brie) as the most attractive, followed by Professor Slater, then Britta. (Gillian Jacobs).

How about you?

Not to mention Brita in a leotard. That was a plus.

Re: The 1/20 show.

This is why television was invented.

brita looked the best she’s ever looked. Pierce was on fire. the ending bit was awesome.

get 'em while they’re goobery

“When I was thirty, people would wish me dead to my face! THAT was RESPECT!”

“Let me get the Break-up Form…”

This is one of the most consistently witty shows I have seen in years.

One word: Bones. And Emily Deschanel comes in third.

Good show. I loved Pierce’s reaction when Jeff told him he should drop dead.

Also the crossword puzzle gag. “Don’t you see the pattern here?”
