I thought in “the Pit”, the rules were much less stringent than in other forums.
Also if samclem were not acting as a moderator but just as another poster, I have no problem with that.
Got a mental image of John Corrado on a balcony, singing Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina…
Thanks for your support on this, and for saying exactly what I would like to say. Except for this last sentence.
Congratulations- now drag your ass out of your basement and go get some fresh air, maybe you’ll realize how pathetic it is to invest any emotion in a message board.
Are you *quite * sure that’s something you want to protect as it is?
But Jesus, who knew calling someone a troll was like calling them a nigger?
Pure bullshit and you know it, John. You of all people know better so your hissy fit is disingenuous at best and very close to deliberate lying. SamClem couldn’t ban anybody, as you know. An ancient cite, used by a single mod to ban a poster? Pure, unadulterated bullshit.
Given your own lack of integrity in this tantrum, that’s a blessing for all concerned.
While my first reaction is to think that some people need firing and others need banning, upon further reflection I think this is mostly a result of one of the worst-feeling months in a very long time. Two friends dying in the last two weeks and another tragedy left unmentioned online has me in a mood to urge people to take a step back and try not to fight so much. And I think that, totally disconnected from me, there’s been a lot of negativity all over the SDMB building up over the last few months, and I feel that it’s really impacting the moods of people. Maybe all parties should just walk away for the weekend and enjoy the other 99% of life, then come back and try to start with a fresh outlook on things - people - whatever. How about it, just everyone simmer down, walk away, and relax. Scylla, you aren’t going to be banned; John, there’s no need to leave for good; Sam, just let it go and walk away; everyone else, just try to find something bright and good, because life can be really terrible, but it can be a whole lot worse if you try.
How dare you be logical, rational and caring at a time like this! The nerve of some peole.
Yeah, well, you’re a peole, too.
But is that really trolling? I mean, it happens all time. Did you know President Bush recently was awarded the Purple Heart for taking hurtful criticism? If that conjures up images in your mind of a public military ceremony in which Bush was pinned with a medal by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, you’ve been had. It is a lie, deliberately worded in a way that revises what actually happened. But it’s a whole Pit thread. I thought trolling had an element of trying to push people’s buttons, not just deliberately posting false information, or information worded so wrongly that it may as well be false for being useless.
I remember that thread. It was a long ass time ago, and I believe it was a pit thread that had something to do with the Republican’s southern strategy. I think Diogenes was involved in the thread as well.
I have to hand it to you, you are funny.
Scylla and Diogenes involved in a pit thread that had to do with Republican strategy. That will narrow it right down.
Would the thread samclem is looking for happen to be one of the ones linked to from this post? (one of the links in there is described as “the thread in which [Scylla] admitted he is sometimes intentionally dishonest in debates”; there’s also “the thread … assessing the level of acceptance of such an approach”)
I have no position on anything; I’m just trying to help find what’s being looked for, in case it exists.
This is so sad. I’m fairly certain that there was a time when no mod would ever think about asking the membership for evidence of Scylla’s trolling. He had deep respect from the board. But, since the war in Iraq, or rather the occupation, its getting really hot in here for conservatives. My impression though is that conservatives don’t quit. John Corrado ?
samclem, by any measure of decency, you shouldn’t accuse, directly or indirectly anyone of admitting to be a troll unless you could back it up. You even knew that, when you spent half an hour searching before posting . What the hell were you trying to accomplish? Tear someone down that you don’t like?
This is really getting ugly. I wish you could see that.
Is there no depth to which you will not stoop in order to make it about you?
This raises an interesting question: How are we, the average readers, supposed to be able to tell when a person with ‘Moderator’ under their name is acting as a moderator, and when they’re being their ordinary selves? How (in fact) can it ever be true, that a moderator posting from his moderator account, will not be reacted to AS a moderator, even if he says “I’m just an ordinary poster today”? I should think it would be better if the mods had posting-accounts for when they are merely posting, and mod accounts for when they are moderating.
It does look very much, from what I can see, as though samclem, a moderator, wanted evidence of trolling by an ordinary poster, couldn’t find it himself, and appealed to the greater populus to help him find that evidence. He can claim this was for his own personal information all he wants, but as long as he posts as ‘samclem, moderator’…it’s going to be damn tough to believe it.
I think you have it. I think it was the link titled “Scylla admitted he is sometimes intentionally dishonest in debates.”
I couldn’t read that one as it was to a dead link. I’m involved with kids here tonight, so forgive me. I’m distracted.
I’m almost certain that’s the one.
Here’s the jist of my complaint, as a poster, never as a mod.
Scylla once posted that he wasn’t above posting something that he knew to be not true. Maybe it was in debates. Maybe somewhere else. But he knew what he posted was not the truth. He did it for effect.
If I have misrepresented his intent in this, I’ll apologize.
My only interest in posting in the thread which spawned this was, that I felt Scylla might have been posting for effect. With him, you never know. He sometimes posts outlandish things, but “forgets” to add a smiley.
The link in xenophon41’s post is dead, but can be easily modified to go to where it seemed to want to go (click the link in my post instead of in xenophon41’s post)
