Composing music for media (film, games, TV, commercials, etc) has always been an area of interest for me. Does anyone know how to get started in this field? Where does one get an education, etc. I am already majoring in music education but I might like to pursue this area after my graduation
FWIW, my alma mater, Berklee College of Music has a Film Scoring major. I started in the Film Scoring department, but I didn’t get along with the department head so I moved to Music Synthesis instead.
Mostly I’d recommend getting some strong basic composition skills. The theory you’re getting in MusEd is applicable to anything you want to apply yourself to. If you already know how to write and arrange well, you’ll be way ahead of the game if you end up in a Film Scoring program.
I don’t know what sort of setup you might have, but if you’ve got some sort of MIDI/digital recording setup on your PC you may want to just try videotaping a TV program and writing your own soundtrack to it.
The first thing that came up at Amazon when I searched for Film Scoring is Berklee’s book on the subject. Picking that up and reading through it couldn’t hurt.
