Looking for film material for soundtrack composition excercise

My better half is trying to get into the biz of soundtrack composition.

She’s about to be listed on a site that networks filmmakers with composers and would like to practice catering to the specific wishes of a client.

I’m looking for any (legal) downloadable video files/clips to use with her in some roleplaying (not that kind, ya perv) where I will provide a video clip, a completely made-up-by-me story and context to accompany the clip, and a set of requirements for what I want the score to sound like.

I’ve tried various searches for clips and samples on film school sites and have had no luck so far. We’re hoping to use some actual video to convert to mp4 and so that she can use her copy of Logic Express to sync the video to the music.

If there’s already a soundtrack, we can strip all the audio a la silent film era, but ideally I’d like to find at least one or two clips with sound/dialogue but no music.

Any suggestions?

Ah screw it. I’ve had enough luck in the searching I’ve been doing all day to find a bunch of threads with people wanting to try and do the same thing, but ultimately giving up.

This is truly a chicken/egg industry, it seems. Short of finding a student filmmaker who has work that needs to be scored there don’t seem to be any way of legally getting access to 5 minutes worth of footage.

I’m surprised at such a significant difference between film and music in that area. Musicians have free downloads of their stuff everywhere, collaborative sites like macjams and icompositions have soundbeds and songs available for re-mixing, re-mastering, collaborating and adding vocals or other instrument tracks, etc.

The best I can do to help her practice is to act like a crazy person.

“Ok, imagine we’re watching a scene starting…now. A woman is sitting on a park bench, eating a sandwich. She’s on her lunch break from work. I’m thinking some quirky staccato strings would be nice through here, as she watches some people jog by. In about 5 seconds, a soccerball is going to land in her lap, and I want you to use a cymbal crash or something…”
