Computer ? -everything is suddenly larger than before

The other day I restarted my computer and everything on it appeared much larger than when I shut it down before. The desktop, wallpaper and icons suddenly were a good deal bigger. When I open my internet page, everything, window frame and the site, are also much larger than before. I have done everything I can think of to reset the computer to where it was before but without any luck. I have been to preferences, display in the control panel but nothing works. Programs like MS Word seem unaffected by this.

I am using Windows 98 and Netscape 7.1. I am hoping someone here might know what the problem is and how I can fix it. It is getting quite annoying since now I have to scroll sideways on pages that used to fit within the window.

I hope I have explained it well enough to give any experts the right idea.

Many thanks.

Well, it’s obviously a problem with the screen resolution, but if you can’t fix it in Control Panel > Display then i’m not sure what to suggest. It’s been a while since i’ve used Win98, but is there a “Settings” tab in the display area that shows you a screen resolution slider? And if so, what happens when you try to use it?

If it’s not a basic display issue like that, then another possibility might be something to do with the monitor itself. Is there a control panel on the monitor for changing screen resolution?

Finally, maybe there’s a problem with your monitor drivers.

Sorry, that’s about all the advice i can muster. Good luck!

I’m with mhendo. I suspect that on the “Settings” tab under Display, the resolution setting (lower right corner) has been jostled down to something like 800 by 600 and needs to be nudged to the right to get a finer resolution.

If you have a scroll wheel on your mouse, you can adjust the settings on the fly by holding down the CTRL key (Shift? ALT?) and scrolling the wheel up and down to adjust the size settings. That does not always work on Deb’s puter. (Accidentally scrolling the wheel with the proper control key changes the display size, but finding the proper key to hold down to reset the size is always a hit-or-miss proposition.)

Oh, below the slider that changes the displayed pixels, there is a button named “Advanced.” Click it to be sure that you are not using Large Fonts or a special setting that is larger than normal.

Side note – if somehow the system’s driver was set to standard VGA instead of your specific video adapter this would explain the issue. If this is the case you will be unable to increase the resolution. If you’re in this boat then you will need to reinstall your video adapter.

Thanks all. It was the resolution that got moved to the right. All is back to normal and I don’t have to throw my computer out the window…this time.
