Elite.

I was still playing Elite Plus (with the slightly updated graphics) well into the lifetime of my Windows 95 box. No joystick at the moment, or else I might still try and play it today.

I miss that game so much. I wish there was an updated version.

Hey, thanks very much. Can you recommend it? A few years back I bought a game supposed to be similar to Elite (not this one) and it was horrible.

Recently took a stroll through Ultima VII. Not only does it still hold up, it runs better under DOSBox than it ever did under DOS.

Time for me to weasel in my obligatory plug for the Ultima V: Lazarus Dungeon Seige Mod.

Takes a timeless classic and makes it even better. In…uhm…semirealtime too.

My favourite 4x game is Space Empires IV (2000). The scope is simply huge, it’s easily modded and you can micro-manage everything. The graphics are 2d Bitmaps so it’s still playable, albeit at low resolution only. I like the combat engine in SEV but I can’t get it to work in Vista (SEIV will) and the gameplay changes were a step backwards IMO.

Oolite IS Elite; a version that runs on modern computers.

Just a small update. After that post I decided to uninstall, re-download (D2D) and try again. It worked! They must have patched it since I last tried.
