Spoofe, I think you’re being way to hard on DKW. I’m sensing a ton of self righteousness from you because you never use cheat codes and he does. Correct me if I’m wrong but we’re still talking about video games right? You know, plopping your ass down for some entertainment/enjoyment and possibly a little hand-eye coordination exercise.
I understand you like the challenge of practising until you’re good. That’s cool. That takes a lot of patience and a spark of talent. But if I want to check out the last level of Tony Hawk 2 without investing 2 months, should I really be stoned to death in the public square for using a cheat code?
Use of cheat codes don’t have to be as cut and dried as you’re making them out. When I used to play Doom alot, I would try to beat the game honestly, but sometimes I wanted to just wander around like the spectre of death and blow the shit out of some unsuspecting monsters.
I’m not sure how to address either your or DKW’s arguments on joysticks/controllers. Except to say this: my experiences with video games have been primarily with consoles until very recently, only because I didn’t have a PC to do it justice. Now that I’ve got the juice, I’ve found non-control pad like controllers (big ass joysticks, that is) somewhat cumbersome. However, I recently got a decent flight simulater and I now wish I had a flight stick. It’s all a matter of taste. If someone would rather use nothing but keyboards and mouses (mice?) to play a video game, let him.
From a manufacturing standpoint, consoles are better because they’re standardized. That means they’re easier to program for and repair. The main problem with consoles is their lack of high-resolution monitors; they’re still seen as something you add on to a television rather than something that stands alone as an entertainment device [a monitor hookup and a graphics system that can use it would do wonders here, but then you don’t have speakers included with the monitor, so you’d need a speaker hookup too]. Consoles are now getting internet connections and (some, sadly) hard drives - which I think will add more problems than solutions. You don’t need bulk storage on a game console, and hard drives bring along lots of potential problems which means that you need an operating system capable of handling all those problems, and that operating system is going to slow everything else down. The reason that consoles are so simple to design now is that by their accepted design standards, you can only play one game (program) at a time. - MC
I like the pc better because they have allot more chocies of games + you can play all your playstation games on it. I usually play my games on playstation. In pc games there are bugs and you have to upgrade or use patches. I just love the multiplayer and graphics and sounds for the pc. I use pc cause of multiplayer and some games not avaliable for the ps or counsels. take diablo 2 for an example. its 3 cds long and ocmpressed. it will never come out for the ps or ps2. also you can always play online if your friends are on vacation.
This example really hits home- I’ve been playing this game til my thumbs bleed and I still can’t figure out how to Bluntslide the Awning in Philly. Or get up on the roof consistently. I normally don’t use cheats but I’m nearing the end of my rope…
Not to toot my horn, but I did beat THPS2 without cheats.
But you have to beat it with all the characters to get all the goodies. Once you’ve beat it once or twice, slogging through the other 8 characters(or however many others there are) gets downright tedious.
I don’t want to eat up precious electrons here, but Mojo if you want some tips, email me and I can clue you in.
I prefer the pc games over the console. The console controllers (except for the immortal Atari 2600 joystick) are built for tiny fingers and hands, which can glide over the buttons much easier that my big fingers can. I feel much more comfortable at the controls with my keyboard and mouse. Never even used Sidewinder yet.
I beg to differ. The PSX controller is perfect for my hands, and the N64 is apparently built for larger hands than mine - certainly much more nimble, anyway. And my hands are big (Everything about me is, actually…).
And the PSX analogue stick is probably the most WONDERFUL video-game controler I’ve ever used - even if it takes a little getting used to to avoid dashing across the screen at inappropriate moments.
I don’t. He’s basically been saying “PC games suck 'cuz I can’t beat 'em”. He’s been haughty and abrasive in the whole thread, and utterly contemptuous of PC gamers. If he decides to act without a shred of decency, I see no reason to provide him with decency in return.
Whatever. I’m not going to get in the middle of this.
I don’t see it that way but I guess it’s your call. I just don’t see why we have to hit the warpath over video games. And believe me I do take my video games seriously.
