The CelynComputer keeps keeps going into Standby mode.
I do not know why, but lately my computer keeps thinking it has been told to go on “Standby”. Previously, I had assumed it was a minor glitch - the kind where some accidnetal key combination caused it to do that. Lately, however, it is doing it al lot more, and I wonder why.
Sometimes it says "oops - cannot do that as there is an active dial-up connection, but sometimesit says “ah - please wait while your ocmputer prepapres to go on standby”. NOt that I have asked it to do anythign of the kind of course. Lazy thing!
It is running WIndows 98, and using IE6 browser, and sometimes Opera browser.
I’d be very happy to know if anyone has any idea what is going on, and advice on how to stop it, please.
Right click anywhere on the desk top, select Properties, select the Screensaver tab, click the Settings button in the “Energy saving features of monitor” block, and next to System Standby, select Never.
Ah, thank you very much. Mr/Ms Fear. Every possible choice now says “never”. Og knows, my comp is an old slow thing, and is good enough at demanding a reboot - it does not need to be stopping for a rest all the time.
Thanks!
And now, noticing a location of “near America’s Stonehenge”, I must be off to learn about it. At first it sounded like the title of a Robin Williamson album to me, but - aha - I shall have fun learning about it. Interesting! Well, that is Celyn’s evening entertainment sorted out. (Hey, why not call it “America’s Callanish”, Callanish being older than Stonehenge? )
Ta muchly - not only do you helpfully answer my sad question, but you also provide an interesting thing to learn about!
What about when that doesn’t work, one of the computers at work does this. First I tried changing when it should go into standby from 2 hours to whatever the max is, still no change, now it’s set to never (BTW sometimes it goes after a couple of mins, sometimes a couple of hours, sometimes not at all). And of course it has to be the computer with the printer hooked up to it, and the one with the financial program data file on it. Which means whenever I can’t print or open the Quick Books file I have to go wake it up, but I really should complain, it’s only 4 feet away from my desk.
OTOH, 20% of the time my screen saver on my home computer won’t turn on (well, not a screen saver, just turns off the monitor). But that’s another thread.
If all the software sleep functions are defeated in the (1) screensaver and (2) power control section (in Control Panel) you then go and look at the BIOS settings. Go into the BIOS at startup (if you don’t how to do this just grab a handy geek for few minutes) In the BIOS of modern PCs there is usually a setting where you can adjust the power time outs. Defeat all power conservation options and/or power time outs. Save and reboot.
