I went and downloaded something off of KaZaA, what was described to be a “document” which would help explain how to “Burn dvd on cd-r discs”. I know, I’m a fool for even downloading it, but what is done is done. Anyhow, when it finished, and I clicked on it, it did nothing. I then noticed that the icon had what looks to be a little clock like image on it. I thoguht nothing of it, and went about my business. I tried to delete it but it says can not delete it, acces is denied. Anyhow…
…I’ve just noticed that my clock in the lower right hand corner of my screen is going wild. It’s going super fast, and the time is changing over and over again, and I don’t know what to do. Did I destroy something, or is this something that I need to do something simple to fix? Please help, because any and all help will be appriciated. Thanks a lot, so let’s figure this one out!
What kind of Anti-Virus software are you running? Can you do a live update on it?
Do so at this time, then run a full system scan.
Also, I don’t run Kazaa on my system because of all the spyware it loads. Go googling for Adaware, download & run that to get rid of the spyware. Kazaa won’t work after you do that, so you’ll want to copy the stuff you’ve downloaded to another directory, delete Kazaa & go googling for “kazaa lite”. That’s Kazaa with all the spyware hacked out of it. I run adaware about once a week.
Ugh, I just discovered that I was tricked, a type of “joke”. Go to RJLPranks.com and then to Time Traveler, that is what I was hit with. I had to download their program to scan for the program, because it was “hidden”, and THEN delete it. God, I hope whoever did this burns badly.
Yeah, its alway best to inspect downloaded files before running them, especially if they are from a non-trustworthy source.
For example, if the file you downloaded really was a document then it would probably have an extension like .pdf, .txt, .doc, or somesuch. Anything with a .exe is an executable, and could potentially be malignant.
Anyhow, I’m glad it didn’t end up reformatting your hard disks…
sorry… was in a hurry when i posted, and the info you offered wasn’t specific enough for me to give a step by step… anyway, i thought the other dopers would be along to help you with a step by step.
good to see that you figured it out yourself. but keep this in mind for the next time:
if you reboot and it recurs (the problem/joke/whatever), means it’s loading everytime your OS loads. this means it’s being called up by the OS at each boot up. which means that there exists a line, in either the Start Up folder, the .ini file or the registry, that loads the program. once you delete this line, the program will no longer load at each boot. however, it would still exist on your comp. therefore a delete of the program itself would be in order. you were receiving the “access denied” message when you tried deleting 'coz the file was in use (since it was loaded before you even started to use your comp) when you were trying to delete it.
i think i may have confused you further… would someone make me some coffee ?
I have a little prog which when executed appears to be reformatting the victim’s hard drive. I named it “passwords” and put it where a Kazaa/gnutella user could find it on my system. Thus far it has been downloaded twice. I hope it gave someone a good scare.
