Computer help needed!

When I start my computer I’m getting:

Error loading C:\progra~1\Newdot~1
ewdot~2.dll

The computer can’t find the path specified, perhaps because I have nothing in my programs called “newdot…”

I can’t get onto the internet since this started happening.

I don’t have my system disk, but I can get one for a similar-model computer (but with win 95, not 98)

Any help?

Yes, this is searching for files that link to a program that gives you extension options for the internet. In other terms, there is an organization called new. net that distributes software that lets your browser access sites with endings other than .com, .net, and .org

Recommended fix would be to go to the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Then find the New.Net software piece. Uninstall it, and reinstall if you must have it…(go to “www.new.net”) That should take care of it.

Can I reinstall it w/out a system disk?

And are you saying I can run IE/netscape without it? (otherwise how do i go to “www.new.net?”
(i’m sending this on a different computer, BTW)

If it is really happening on computer startup (not browser startup) this page will walk you through what you need to do to get rid of the problem.

okay, I went in and stopped it from opening new net, and I no longer get the prompt on startup, but I still can’t connect to the net.

It appears that it is a plug-in that has been giving many users problems. Try uninstall, your browser should work without it, I do not have it and have never heard of it until today. If uninstall as ACK suggested does not work then follow their instructions here to remove it from the registry. Just tread carefully.

This is spyware. IIRC, this particular bit of nastiness breaks Winsock files so that if any Newdot files are removed, you’ll be unable to connect to the net. I recommend re-installing Winsock from your Windows CD and then downloading Ad-Aware and running it to clean up any remaining contagion.

Hodge, I don’t have my system disk. :frowning:

I have ad-aware, and I think that’s what happened. I deleted the program w/o uninstalling it. I tried ACK’s way, and it’s telling me the program’s already removed.

Now foolwing directions of Farkle’s thread.

If you need to re-install winsock you can grab it here, the page also tells you how to get if from your CAB files if you have them on your system.

How’m I gonna reinstall winsock if I can’t get on the net.

Farkle, maybe you can help: Ive gotten as far as:

I don’t have any newdotnet folders, but I do have strings in the 000000002 folder… i delete ths whole folder, right?

That is out of my league but hopefully someone will trot along and be able to help you out, if you have backed up your registry you could give it a shot but if you don’t have any newdot folders I’d leave it alone and trust Hodge in that you need winsock reinstalled. If the machine concerned has CAB files try to reinstall it from there, if not download it to a floppy disk on a machine that can get on the net and take the disk to the other.

I am resurrecting this thread because I recently encountered the identical problem. Unlike the OP, I can access the internet, but I’ve got this “newdot” spyware thingee. Any up to date advice on how to get rid of it? I’ve run a Hijackthis! analysis if anyone wants to look at it (it makes no sense to me).

Oh, what the heck, here’s the hijackthis! printout.
