Computer issues - touchpad won't left-click.

Could somebody provide some advice please?

I have a fairly new Toshiba laptop and the touchpad won’t left-click. Right button works fine and gives me menus but the left-click just doesn’t seem to respond.

This problem occurred after I installed some shockwave games (from a reputable company so I very much doubt any virus). I had this issue previously when I installed a game so I uninstalled it and using tabbing and arrow keys I changed the orientation to left-handed and then to right-handed again. That seemed to fix the problem.

This time I can’t seem to do the same. When in the control panel for the mouse the right and down arrow keys don’t work so I can’t select left-handed. Re-applying right-handed doesn’t affect anything. I’ve tried rebooting. I’ve uninstalled the games I downloaded. I’ve enabled touchpad tapping and the buttons. I’ve trawled through as many help files as I can and I now have no clue what to do. Does anybody have any ideas?

Oh and I’m on Windows Vista if that is important.

To get full mouse functionality back, just plug in a USB mouse. Vista will recognize it and use it automatically. This will allow you to try those options in the mouse setup that you can’t currently get to.

Also, you may try a system restore point. If you revert the system to a saved point from before the problem started, that may fix it.

If not, you’ve probably got a hardware problem, not software or drivers. Your touchpad may just have picked that moment to go bad. They’re not too bad to replace in most laptops if you’re handy with a screwdriver, and usually aren’t terribly expensive, maybe $30 to $50.

Thankyou, I’ll try those.
