computer mess

Since my last cd player didn’t play anything, let alone
a disc I have which has photos on it and a copy of my great-grandfather’s journal sent by my second cousin, they replaced my entire whatever you call that big box underneath the tv I mean the monitor screen thing. They sent my files to a mysterious “mainframe” and put the new underbox in and then transported everything to it. It has a CD player as part of it that is called “Microsoft ® CD player/ Windows
95” and it is supposed to be better than the old one, which was called 8x. Now this new one will play my commercial music cd, but it won’t do my ancestory cd! However, I can get the contents of it to appear on the screen.
Problem #2 is that when I reverse horizontal OR vertical on my paintbrush, it reverses all right, but puts either a black smear or a lined smear on part of the drawing.

No insult intended, but do you perhaps mean “the computer”?

Further information, please:

  1. Are you saying your previous CD-ROM drive would not “play” the ancestory CD (which the new one also will not “play”), or did you mean that the ancestor CD was the ONLY thing the old would would “play”?

  2. By “play”, I take it that you mean either

a) the CD contains some sort of program software that should display the pictures or whatever the heck is on the ancestor CD, but when you try to launch that program, it won’t run; or

b) you expected the computer do automatically do something when you inserted the CD, but it doesn’t, although your older computer + CDROM drive did.

In the case of a), please tell us what type of error message you get when you try to run the program. In fact, tell us the exact name of what you double-click when you try to run it and exactly what happens when you do.

In the case of b), since you say you can see the contents of the CD–

– see if, among the items you see, there is a program that you can launch by double-clicking on it.

The previous cd player played nothing. The current one plays music cd’s: I put a music cd disc in the new player 24xMTRP-labelled slot, click on “cd player” icon on my desktop screen, and a square comes up on part of this screen with a replica of some buttons and a time clock. It then plays as the digital clock begins to run backward, and when I press to stop it it stops and black arrow comes on and I can press that and it will play, etc.
However, when I place the ancestor disc in (which everybody in the family can play except for me, and which plays downstairs on another computer) and then click on “cd player” icon, it just says on the cd player square that comes on, “Data or no disc loaded,” and the play arrow is gray. There is nothing else to click on, and I have no idea how onetime I got the subscreen with the contents of the cd laid out on it, but when I clicked on a picture of a file on it (the time it did come up), nothing happened.

So it is a data disc; and the “cd player” icon on your screen is designed to play AUDIO cds, i.e., music CDs.

Double-click “My Computer”

Double-click whichever drive is your CDROM drive

Examine contents. If not already set up that way, set the Views option to show all file extensions. If any file that you see has extension “.exe”, double-click that one. Otherwise, make a list of the files you do see and post that list here and I will tell you how to launch any of them that I recognize.
