Computer not driving monitor

I tried replacing the cord with no luck. I don’t know how to troubleshoot this without replacing parts, would a new video card be my best 1st guess to change? I bought a new computer but still need to fix it so I can get all my stuff off of it. If I bought an adaptor to use the VGI instead of the VGA could this possibly work?

Try using the monitor’s on-screen display to select the correct input. Also make sure you’re plugging the cable into the correct port at the computer end - there may be motherboard ports and ports on the graphics card, and it’s the latter you want to use.

Are you saying the monitor works with the new computer but not the old computer? What type of video cable are you using for each computer - VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort, or DVI? (There’s no such thing as VGI.) Did you select the correct input on the monitor as Quartz suggested? Did the old computer work with this monitor previously, and if so, what did you change (if anything) before it stopped working?

If all else fails, you should be able to remove the hard drive from the old computer and put it in the new computer (if it’s a desktop), or put it in a USB enclosure and connect it to the new computer. It’ll be cheaper than a new video card.

By VGI, do you mean to say DVI? (better resolution path) As mentioned upthread, need to check your cabling arrangement and monitor settings (select DVI input and connection points all along that chain).

Good luck, report back if you can.

I wouldn’t replace video cards until you need to. You should be able to diagnose using what you’ve got on hand.

The monitor had been operating up until it quit working so I know the wiring was correct. I had the type of cable with a DVA on both ends, my monitor has an outlet for HDMI, so I was thinking try a cable with HDMI to DVI. The new computer has a HDMI on both ends and works fine.

I didn’t know the setting on my monitor made a difference, I may have bumped one of them by accident and disabled my current set up, I will check that first. I have a bad feeling that is it.

Do you mean DVI? You need to be careful as there are several types of DVI cable.

I’m guessing you just need to manually select the DVI input on the monitor.

I had bumped the setting from analogue to HDMI, I won’t have a chance to try it out until tomorrow but I am pretty sure I don’t have a problem. The accidental bump was what the new computer needed anyway. Thanks for the help, none of my computer expert friends even thought of this LOL.

DVI is a digital signal so it won’t work on the Analogue setting anyway. You likely have three settings: VGA / Analogue, DVI, and HDMI.
