Computer Q: Customizing IE

The little animated icon in the upper right corner that moves when you’re accessing a web page (forgot what it’s called) got changed from the default Windows one when I stuck an internet provider’s CD in my computer.

How do I change it back and how do I use a custom one? I’ve got IE5. Would upgrading to 5.5 do it?

Thanks.

Upgrading to a new version of IE should work (though it depends on what ISP software you’re using I guess).

I know that when I upgraded from IE 4.0 to 5.0 it changed the icon to the spinning globe, so I assume an upgrade to 5.5 would override any icon that your ISP software has put in there.

I know that for IE 4, you could edit the registry and set it back to the default, and it might still be that way for IE5. Here is how it was done for IE4, but editing the registry is dangerous, so do it at your own peril…

Go to Start | Run and type “regedit” then hit enter. Click on the + next to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER section of the tree to expand it, the expand Software|Microsoft|Internet Explorer. Beneath Internet Explorer, there should be an item in the tree called Toolbar. Single click on Toolbar, the in the righthand frame of the window look for the one or two registry entries that have the string “Brand” in the key name. Their value will be the location of a .BMP file (e.g. “C:\program files\internet explorer\logo.bmp”). If you delete these entries, IE should start using the default animated icons.

The easier and safer way would probably be to upgrade to IE 5.5, though.

repeat of disclaimer: Don’t do this unless you are sure of yourself. Messing with the registry could make you lose data or make windows crash and destroy all that you have worked for these many years. Or something to that effect.
