…at the bottom of my screen. You know, those rectangles at the bottom next to the START button, that tell you where you are? Well, the “e” icon that indicates I have been to my Start EXCITE page is normal (white and blue), but the one next to it, indicating I am here is black. It also seems like the keying is not keeping up with the display. And, I just noticed THIS: up near th top is a yellow rectangle with what looks like black hiroglyphics o the left. I am running W98 on an IBM Clone with IE 5.5.
You sometimes get that when your computer is running low on memory. You probably have plenty, but a process is eating it up. Close a few programs and it will go back to normal, then restart to make sure it doesn’t continue to happen.
Eh, it happens. I think it’s PC gremlins. One way to fix it, however, is to go to oh, say, http://www.tucows.com (any freeware DL site will do) and get and install tweakui. There’s a “repair” tab that has “repair icons” as an option. Click that and you’re good to go.
Oh, and btw, if your desktop icons are ever the ones to turn black, hitting refresh (F5) often clears it up. Doesn’t do squat for your quickstart icons, tho.

Proper Icon Care
Most contemporary icons are produced with great care and attention to detail. How ever, being subjected to repeated clicking and constant bombardment by cathode rays they tend to deteriorate over time.
In order to maintain their graphic integrity it is recommended that the following procedure be followed at least once every six months:
Remove the icon from the monitor, being careful to handle it only by the edges to avoid pixel damage.
Soak in a luke warm soapy solution for 5-10 minutes. Do not rub or scrub or pixels may be shifted, resulting in serious disintegration of the image.
Remove from bath and stand on edge to dry. Under no circumstance attempt to dry with a rag or lens tissue and never subject to blow drying or permanent damage may result. If more than 5% of the pixels have seen loss, replace icon with a new one.
Carefully replace cleaned icon in monitor, taking special care not to touch the surface. Allow to set one hour before using.
If icons need to be exchanged from one computer to another they should be transported only in specially prepared icon cases available at any computer or electronic supply store.
Remember, icons are the heart and soul of the Windows environment and should be treated accordingly.
