Computer question: switching from Firefox back to IE

Hello all,

Last night I decided to download and install Mozilla Firefox, which I often hear is a safer browser to use than Internet Explorer. Well, I did all that and then selected Firefox as my default browser.

Some stuff happened, and not to get into my reasons now, but I just didn’t care for it. I don’t want this to turn into a Firefox vs. IE debate, but I’m just saying I uninstalled Firefox in order to switch back to IE. For the most part, this worked fine.

However, a few small odd changes have occurred. In Windows Explorer, where I save the individual HTML pages for my personal website, the icon in front of them changed from the familiar blue “e” symbol for IE to the Firefox icon. It wouldn’t let me open them because I had uninstalled it. I had to right-click and select “Open With IE,” and I made sure the box was checked for “Always use this program to open these files.” Now I can open those saved HTML pages with IE, but the icon is different again–a much smaller blue “e” in a while rectangle.

Similarly, in the URL window at the top of the screen, where most web addresses displayed a blue “e” icon, now there is the icon for a file of an unknown variety–does anyone know what I mean by this? A friend of mine is worried I’m still not back to normal, that I could still be running Mozilla Firefox instead of IE, even though I uninstalled it and even redownloaded and reinstalled IE 6.0. I’d appreciate any help, even though this doesn’t seem like a big deal. I thank you all in advance.

You are not still running Firefox.

Just go to Control Panel ----> Folder Options —> File Types

Find each file type that you want associated with IE and click Change and select IE.

Select Advanced to change the icon.

That should be it.

Addendum:

I don’t think that you will need to change the icon in addition to the association but if you do, that is when you would use the advanced button.

Another way is to make sure IE is your default browser again. When you set Firefox as your default browser it became the default program to open HTML files and photos so all the IE icons were changed to Firefox icons. You should reset IE as the default.
Open IE, click Tools, Internet Options…, and the Programs tab. Near the bottom there is a button marked Reset Web Settings… Click it and IE will become the default again. Note that other setting in IE you may have changed will revert to defaults as well.
Below that button is a checkbox marked IE should check…default browser. If it’s checked and IE is not the default, it will ask if you want to set it to default when you open IE. If you change it this way, I don’t think any other settings are affected.
