I have an IBM aptiva, probably about 3 years old.
Here’s the deal. On my moniter there is the volume control that used to directly correlate with the volume bar(the one in the task bar). Now I get no sound out of the speakers, I can turn up the volume on the moniter and the master out level options, but still get no sound.
Anyone know what the problem is? especially how it can be fixed?
Do you get absolutely no sound out of your speakers, even when you turn the machine on (most machines beep at boot)?
Have you installed any other sound programs recently? A lot of them have mixer applications in which you can not only change the relative volumes of your master ins/outs etc, but can mute them. I’ve had situations where I’d inadvertently muted a signal and couldn’t figure out why the volume didn’t change.
Forget about the monitor based controls for a moment. If you are saying (as you seem to be) that even maxing the output levels on your speaker icon applet and making sure the mute box is not checked under master volume you are still getting no sound you need to see if you are getting output period. IIRC almost all Aptiva’s have the chip integrated on the motherboard.
Possibilities:
1: Speaker(s) amp is fried. Plug headphones into speaker out jack to test this.
2: Drivers are corrupted. Delete all sound linked hardware drivers in system hardware list and re-start system. Driver’s should re-install automatically on Aptiva.
3: Cable connecting speakers to output jack is loose, damaged or plugged into wrong in-out sound jack.
4: Your sound chip is fried (possible but unlikely).
5: You installed some hardware recently that is sitting on the sound hardware IRQ’s.
6: The sound has been de-activated in the BIOS.
There are other possibilites but these situations cover most of the error scenarios.
