Computer won't turn off

I have a computer question that has stumped my friends. My computer refuses to turn off. I go to shut it down, and it just restarts. I have absolutely no idea why this would happen. If you computer geeks out there could form like Voltron to help me out, I would much appreciate it.

Hold the button in, and don’t let go. Letting go is like reset.

Hold it in until it is definitely off.

What OS are you using?

I recall a virus (can’t remember the name of it now) that did something like that. The version I encountered wouldn’t allow shutdown to do anything at all. Any decent virus scanner should find it, if that’s the cause.

unplug it…if this doesn’t work immidiately dispose of the computer

The button? When I say turning it off, I mean that I go to Shut Down in the Start menu, and click on Turn Off, as opposed to Restart or Log Out. It acts just like I click Restart, it reboots the computer. I don’t have anything in any of my drives either, before you ask.

I am running XP, and I don’t have internet access so I have never really had a anti-virus on my home comp (I am at work now.) And how serious was idol minds post?

To ask the obvious: do you have restart selected in the shutdown dialogue window?

Ignore him. Has it always done this, or is this a recent thing? Also, what make and model is this. I’ll see if this is a known issue with it. If nothing else, reinstalling XP might do the trick.

XP isn’t like that, sailor. After you click Start > Turn Off Computer, you have to explicitly click the button for the action (susepnd/turn off/restart) that you want.

What do you mean by make and model? I have only a basic knowledge of computer hardware, so giving you my specs would be a pain inn the ass. I am running XP Proffesional, and no, restart isn’t selected.

Make and Model:

What brand (Make) is it? Like Compaq, HP, Dell, Gateway, etc.

Model is usually somewhere on the tower like Dell Optiplex 1300 or Compaq Presario 700gxf or HP Pavillion F87434

Those are all made-up model nums but hopefully you understand. If you can supply QED with the make and model then he can look up information on the components (hardware, motherboard, powersupply) and specific aticles about known issues.

You can download this to tell you more than you ever wanted to know about your system configuration.

Google answers suggest that it’s a CMOS problem you have and you need to reset it (can’t explain how without more info atm).

Great link, but I don’t know what any of that means. Please break it down for me like I am an idiot (cause I am an idiot).

You might still want to tell us the make and model so we can tell you how to get to the CMOS settings.

Click Start button, push ‘h’ button, in the resulting screen support section of xp input in the box at the upper right corner, ‘shut down’ then you can read more info.

Heck no, Idol! If the computer will not turn off, send that sucker to me! I have an idea for a perpetual motion machine…

My desktop ATX computers have two power switches, one in back & one in front. Back one is the master one…that one always works to turn it off.
