Computer's sound card freezes my internet downloads

This makes no sense.

Recently I had to get a new Motherboard. It’s listed as a 650EML. (Despite the CPU being three times the speed, I’ve noticed no improvement, but whatever - I haven’t really tested its limits).

I need to get a new video card soon, as my old one is too old and my video avi/mpeg/mov skips.

Anyway, instead of the separate sound card I had with my other MB, this one is built-in. It’s a SB clone I think. And whenever I play a movie, or an MP#, basically anything with some kind of sound involved, my internet (dial-up) suddenly stops.

It doesn’t disconnect, it just refuses to let any more information flow in either direction.

My question is: WTF???

Anyone know why it’s doing this and how I can circumvent this ridiculous inconvenience?

The only thing that seems to make sense is if the modem and sound card were sharing interrupts.

Hmm! That would make sense!

But my modem is using Interrupt 3, and the sound card is using Interrupt 5.

What OS? Mobo manufacturor? Have you checked MS & your mobo manufacturor for the latest drivers? FYI - removing and reloading drivers (assuming some version of Windows here) often clears issues like these.

Win 98, and latest drivers in the Motherboard. Manufacturer? It’s Jetway.

Oh - should have added - is there a NIC in the mix somewhere? NIC’s & Soundcards are famous for fighting over IRQ 5.

What’s a NIC?

Network Interface Card, like an Ethernet card.

Don’t have an Ethernet card installed. Used to, before the previous MB died on me, but haven’t had a need to reinstall it.

Hmm. I bet there’s some simple box I have to untick to get this fixed, right?

According to your manufacturor site, you have an onboard NIC. Try disabling it.

You could just disable the on-board sound and install your old sound card. It’d probably sound better anyway.

It wasn’t enabled in the first place. I checked my Network Adapters.

I might give that a try, but I think I may not have a slot for it. I seem to remember that that was an issue. Could be wrong, though, so I’ll check in the morning.

“But my modem is using Interrupt 3, and the sound card is using Interrupt 5.”

Yes, those are just nbrs, but the address they use is important too.

Windows has a System info in the Control Panel, you should check your modem & sound cards for their properties & for conflicts there. If there is a conflict, it lets you know.
