.coms

Has any word mde it into general usage faster than .coms? The super bowl was full of commercials for “.coms”. It’s used all over the opinions and business pages in the papers. I don’t watch the news, but my bet is it’s all it too.

Lord Flasheart to Nursie: I like it firm and fruity. Am I glad to see you
or did I just put a canoe in my pocket?

Lord Flasheart: She’s got a tongue like an electric eel and she likes the
taste of a man’s tonsils.

.coms have been around for a while, and imho haven’t really become general public buzz words just yet (clarification: you might hear the term on tv every 10 minutes, but I don’t hear it being used by the general public at all, really). Lots of people may have heard the term, but I doubt that people who are not at least pc literate really know what it means. Another good example is pH-balanced. Anybody who buys shampoo or kitty litter has probably seen & used this phrase, but I doubt that more than 1% of them actually know that it stands for power of Hydrogen or even what it represents.

I think words associated with products that were marketed to the general public became better known more quickly, e.g. Coca-Cola.

Always appeal to the lowest common denominator for the quickest possible integration into society.

I work for a web site, so my perception is that The General Public uses the phrase/word “.coms” a LOT.

I am annoyed when it’s written in print “dot.com” – wouldn’t that be pronounced “dot dot com?” Isn’t “.com” or “dotcom” sufficient?

Sucks to your assmar.

“Don’t dot com me!” I have seen that used but not explained.

I know 2 people, not mutually acquainted, who are big on using dot-com as part of explitiaves. e.g.
“that sucks-dot-com”
“kick @ss-dot-com
“blow me-dot-com”

I checked network solutions domain name registration, and these are already taken:
dot.com

dotdotdot.com
dotdotdotdot.com

dotdotdotdotdotdot.com

dotcom.com
dotcomdotcom.com
dotcomdotcomdotcom.com
dotcomdotcomdotcomdotcom.com www.com
wwww.com
wwwww.com
wwwww.com
wwwwww.com
wwwwwww.com
wwwwwwww.com
wwwwwwwww.com
wwwwwwwwww.com
wwwwwwwwwww.com

Also, notice how spoken reference to a web site omits the “http://www” prefix now?

My former company had business with the Department of Transportation. When we went to look at their web site, it was http://www.dot.gov . Smartass that I am, I said, “Oh, dubya-dubya-dubya-dot-dot-dot-guv!” Mentioning all those "dot"s got my boss confused.

Wrong thinking is punished, right thinking is just as swiftly rewarded. You’ll find it an effective combination.
