Conan the Barbarian

I hope the movie lives up to the trailer.

I found a site that has links to a tavern wench scene that indicates the movie’s creators didnt have all those Disney issues with naked women (NSFW site link, just exposed breasts but you know how employers are):

And give what a great job Jason Momoa did as Khal Drago in “Game of Thrones” and as That Warrior Type Guy in Stargate Atlantis, I think he will kick ass as Conan, so I’m thinking we might have a winner … although the August release date is bothersome.

I can’t imagine Conan without Arnold

I think Momoa is a MUCH better actor than Arnold and given a decent role, will do a much better job of it than Arnold could ever have.

To be fair, a brick is a better actor than Arnold.

yeah but Arnold’s acting abilities weren’t what made the first movie

I loved the first Conan when I was young.

But if Arnold would of be doing this one, I may not even rent it. But check me off for wanting to go see this one when it’s out.

To be fair to Arnold, I’m not convinced that there is any way to deliver the line: Crom! that won’t make it sound ridiculous.

“Don’t you know the Dewey Decimal System?!?

Oops, sorry, wrong Conan…

Ah, another Weird Al fan! And don’t even turn your books in late!

Okay, I gotta say: that was a damn good trailer and makes me look forward to the movie.

To be fair to Arnold, I don’t think that he’s actually a bad actor. Rather, he’s actually a pretty decent comedic actor. The problem is that he’s usually cast for his body, and those sorts of roles aren’t generally very comedic.

That’s a good point. “Big strong dude” isn’t generally the laugh riot character.

Wow, that trailer was totally awesome - and it didn’t even feature the lead! Plus bonus Ron Perlman is always good.

Arnold is a good actor, or at least he was when they made Stay Hungry, in which it is plainly obvious that he is a very competent actor in a sympathetic and non-comedic role. But very few directors since Bob Rafelson have made any attempt to harness this talent.

I found Momoa pretty unpalatable in SG-A. I’ve never seen him in Game of Thrones (or know anything about the series). Are his two performances significantly different?

I’m kind of pissed that they’re going with a similar plot to the Arnie movie - parents murdered and village destroyed - (at least it looks like they’ve discarded having Conan grow up in slavery). That’s a complete slap in the face to the REH stories, which made it clear that nobody, but nobody, fucks with the Cimmerians.

And I thought Arnie hit the “barbaric accent” perfectly.

No disrespect to the Governator (I’d rather not have him find me and remove my limbs :)), but yeah, he is a comedian, such a comedian in fact that he turns the ‘serious’ movies into comedies. On that note, the humor almost doesn’t work in a comedy, he’s only funny when he’s trying to be serious IMO.

Usually I despise remakes, but if it wasn’t for Arnold in the Conan movies, I doubt they would have lasted so long as the great treasures they are. Cheap costumes, bad effects, bad acting from the whole cast, etc…looking back on them they seem rather silly, the D&D movie even did better in that regard, and it was still just as sad. Conan needs to be remade, if only to keep future generations from looking back at the first and saying: ‘why the hell didn’t they burn these?’. Now they can say: ‘Oh, to remind themselves what not to do, understood’…now comes my signature…Bwahahaha!

Well in GoT he’s a REAL barbarian, a leader of a tribe of horsemen who are clearly modelled on the Mongols only larger and fiercer. He marries a princess from a more civilized land in a political arranged marriage but they end up falling for each other which is kinda understandable for the princess, whose experience of sex has consisted mostly of being molested by her half-mad brother, but I had trouble with the hot blooded barbarian falling for the pasty white chick. Still, he handled the role just fine, though it was not especially demanding he was about as fierce and imposing a barbaric king as you could want. Which is why I think he’ll do great as Conan.
