Conan’s Canadian stay was not a "Triumph’. The exact words included “appalling”, “racist”, “hatemongering” and “repulsive”. (How can you say that of a man who regularly employs Abe Vigoda and made made Whitman Mayo’s year with his U.S. show?
The major pomme de dischord:
Oddly, reaction seems to be stronger in Ontario than in Quebec, partly perhaps because Ottawa coughed up $760,000 USD to convince him to host the show from Toronto for a week.
Canadian Dopers: is this a big deal up there? Were you offended?
Personally, I wasn’t. But I’m not a francophone. As for all the other jokes at Canada’s expence I wasn’t offended at all. I expected to see that sort of humor. Conan made fun of Americans too, and I don’t see them getting angry.
However, it doesn’t seem to be a big deal out here. Maybe it is in the central provinces, but I thought most of his shows were funny (except the Joel’s brain thing in the first one, that was just stupid).
I think it’s being made out to be a bigger deal than it was. Some people got offended sure, but thats to be expected. It seems that the vocal minority is blowing things out of proportions.
However, I’m a fan of the show and a westerner, so I may be a little biased.
