Conception difficult at high altitudes?

Is it true that women who live at low altitudes have difficulty conceiving children at high altitudes- e.g. during a honeymoon in the Andes?

Probably this is because physical exertion is difficult due to decreased air pressure. I think that the distinguishing factor about birth is that it presses the limits of a woman’s physical tolerance, rather than anything else about birth.

I never heard that it was conception that was difficult at altitude but more specifically it was carrying the baby and giving birth. Mountain women who are pregnant typically descend to the lower elevations at some point during pregnancy to carry and bear the child, then re-ascend once birth happens.

Yep, what astro said.

I don’t live in the Andes but -

I live at 11,200’. People are pretty cautious about giving birth up here. Some of it seems to relate to low oxygen. There also seems to be a corolation between MS and high altitude births.

On top of that, hospitals aren’t close, and winter, bad roads, snow and ice are more common than not.

OTOH, I know many people that have had no problems.

Thanks for the replies. It was specifically the problem of conceiving a child I was interested in, rather than childbirth itself.

I found this here :

but I’m uncertain as to the scientific rigour behind that- it sounds a little anecdotal.

Well, since there are 10+ million people in Mexico City, conception can’t be all THAT difficult.
