Confederate Flag: stay or go?

I was born in Texas and lived there until I was 19. I’ve heard about the alleged glory and nobility of the Confederacy all my life. (And about the Alamo and the war for Texas Independence.)

There was nothing noble about fighting for the right for rich plantation owners to keep slaves. Robert E. Lee was a traitor. (The Texans were also fighting for the right to own slaves, as well. Slavery was illegal in Mexico and that bothered Jim Bowie and Stephen F. Austin.)

Put that flag in a display box on the front steps of the State House with the following legend printed in very large letters so no one can honestly say they can’t read it:

This is a reminder of a shameful past. We keep this flag here to remind ourselves that our ancestors were wrong about a great many things, that they were as human as we and not gods. We do this so their mistakes will - we hope - never be made again.
