I’ve always glanced at the tabloids while in line at that supermarket but rarely picked one up to look at. So I’m not sure what possessed me to do this. Part of it was seeing the NE editor on the Colbert Report. But the idea had always been in the back of my mind.
I would like to hear from fellow readers and subscribers. What can I expect from my weekly issue of NE? Critics are also welcome. I’d be interested in knowing what I should be on the look out for. FYI, I tend to have a fairly open mind but don’t pass judgment on things that I read unless I need to for some reason. So I’m neither “skeptical” nor “credulous”. I exist mostly in the thick mists between those two extremes.
A couple of years ago we subscribed–we, have read it off and on for the past 30 years or so. After subscribing, we were lucky to receive any issues on time, with at least 1/3 missing and never delivered. I don’t know if the post office was stealing them, but we rarely if ever received them on time. Sorry, but I’ll never subscribe again. Just buy the issue at the checkout. At least I know I’ll get the issue.
Between those that are taken by little green aliens for informational purposes, and those taken by Bat Boy for sanitary litter and nesting purposes, you’re lucky you received any at all.
Celebrity news, and nothing but. I remember as a child, the NE had all kinds of non-celebrity things (“Man Cut In Half By Train Lives to Tell the Tale”); but nowadays, the NE and its ilk seem to concentrate on celebrity news: who’s on a diet, who’s broken up with whom, and who’s seeing whom. Meh. I miss the Weekly World News; as I recall, that was the last of the tabs to go for the true but weird (in small squibs pulled off wire services and printed on page 23) and the totally fabricated (in banner headlines on page 1).
