#3 is the lie. My dog’s name is Blaze. When I was 19 I hitchhiked to Colorado from Texas with my (male) friend and another couple. The other couple left for New York while we stayed. At some point, he decided to go back to Houston, and I decided to go on to Corning, New York by myself. I met a lot of great people, and only had a couple of little scares. I’d never do it again, though!
Martha: Of the several possibilities, I’ll guess your parents live in Istanbul, which straddles the European (Thrace) and Asian (Anatolia) parts of Turkey.
As for my statements:
True. When I was a freshman in college (1978), I got the opportunity to take a “January Term” two-week trip to Cuba. Washington’s relations with Havana were relaxed enough to make the jaunt legal, but not relaxed enough to allow the flight to depart from the USA, so the members of the group had to individually make their way to Montreal after Christmas vacation. The faculty adviser had obtained some of our traveling papers, so I carried a passport but had no visa nor Cubana Airlines ticket on my person.
When I truthfully revealed the purpose of my trip to Canadian customs officers, I was greeted with suspicion, and put in a taxi (generously paid for by Greyhound) back to the Buffalo bus station. I called my parents in Ohio, they called the hotel where the group was meeting, a student called the Peace Bridge and explained the situation to the authorities’ satisfaction. Several hours later, I made the crossing again, and the customs officer who had rebuffed me earlier remembered me and told me to have a good trip. Vindication was sweet!
True. I had spent the afternoon in Indianapolis. At either the restaurant where I ate lunch or the library where I spent a couple of hours, my apartment key slipped out of my pocket. I knew my sweetie (who also has a key) was due to arrive in about 90 minutes, so I just stayed outside (I live in the back rooms of a house that’s been divided into three rental units) until she showed up and let me in. It was raining, but I sat on my covered porch and read the TV Guidethat had come in that day’s mail.
False. I’ve never met Miller, but I have talked to Jay Leno a couple of times when attending his stand-up performances. On the second such occasion (a couple of years after the initial encounter), he remembered th original meeting and said “I never forget a face!” I have no reason to doubt him.
By the way, of the 27 Dopers who’d “fessed up” as of the time I began typing this post, I’ve correctly ferreted out 13 liars. Not a great track record, but at least better than what I’d have scored by random chance…
My senior year of high school I caught one of my teachers gathering information about another teacher at my school in an attempt to get him fired. I made notes on what I read and the day I graduated, I went to the teacher that was about to be nailed and told them everything.
I was briefly married during my senior year of high school. It was annulled about a month after graduation. My closest friends at the time didn’t even know about it and only a handful of my family members (including DH) know about it now.
One of my parents is a convicted felon, has a rap sheet a mile long and has been in and out of prison a gazillion times. #2 is the lie.
[QUOTE=RainGrowsBrite]
Im hoping that the lie is #3- unless of course #3 has a amazing love story that goes along with it.
Sadly, #3 is true. It was a closure kind of thing (it had been going on for a while). On a happier note, the wedded couple is doing well. They had a kid not too long ago.
NO, NO, NO – the weekend wilderness getaway can go forth as planned. I like the outdoors - I love to camp- don’t mind tents ( cabins & campers are better ) but I don’t mind the ground. I like the roar of the campfire- snuggling up on a chilly evening, I just hate to fish.
I once had a close encouter with a bear while hiking.
I once had to chase giraffes off the runway in order for my plane to land.
I once had a close encouter with a penguin in its native habitat, complete with snow and ice.
is true. I was in Shenandoah National Park going for a hike with my mother, and we saw a brown bear about 100 feet from us. It was ahead of us on the trail. We kept walking, cautiously and it ignored us.
is true. I was in Botswana and the day that we were scheduled to fly between the Savute Elephant Camp and the Kwai River Camp, our guide drove the safari vehicle up close to three giraffes who were on the nice grassy airstrip. The planes (which held 6 people, including the pilot) had to wait until the giraffes had left before they could land.
is false. I did see penguins in their native habitat, but there was no snow or ice. This is because it was in southern South Africa and they were African (formerly called jackass) penguins. They were very hot in the sun.
I true. I did a survey for one of those “clipboard people” in the mall. He told me I fit the demographic & would I like to do a second interview fro $50? Being broke at the time, I accepted. At that interview, I was given a $50 bill, and told I could be chosen for one more interview, for $100. That one was filmed on a street in Austin Texas. When we were finished they told me it was an AT&T commercial, and I’d be paid at Screen Actors’ Guild scale. It aired for 1.5 years.
I doubt I ever convinced anyone to switch to AT&T, but all my friends talk to the “clipboard people” now.
Is FALSE! Give me a good trauma any day.
True. The cats run the house, but the husband thinks he does. I’m just the “MOM.”
