If MGT can get nominated I really fear for the country.
It’s one thing for a slimy con man like Trump to get nominated (and elected), but she is clear about who she is. She is dangerously insane and very open about it. I have enough faith that I believe she is going to be marginalized and basically put in a box. I expect her to lose her presence on social media soon as well.
I fear she is going to be a major player in the GOP going forward. She’s the leader of the "crazy faction’ which unfortunately (since many sane Republicans are leaving the party) is a very large proportion of the party that the GOP cannot afford to piss off.
I actually think it would be a good thing for her to pursue her ambitions in the Republican Party, as it might force them to reject the crazy wing of the party or be split in two.
This. Jews as a semi-mythical Biblical people are fine. Actual living breathing Jewish people in their communities? Highly suspect at best. And anti-Semitic rhetoric is growing in private. It is a terrible, terrible mistake to think that a conservative-controlled United States would be safer or more hospitable to Jewish citizens.
The thing is, people like this thrive on bad publicity - so long as that bad publicity is coming from the hated “lamestream” media, of course. They wear it as a badge of honor. In their minds (or at least in the line of bullshit they’re selling to their constituents), the media hates them because they have the temerity to call the journalistic establishment out on their lies and liberal bias. And they’ll be damned if anyone expects them to quiet down. And guess what, their constituents eat this up. Because in their minds, the globalist elitists who run the media are also looking down their noses at good, hardworking, patriotic Americans like them.
'Zactly. We can expect McCarthy to tut-tut about wacko Senators and McConnell to tut-tut about wacko Representatives. Because in each case they’re bitching about people who can’t hit them back where it hurts.
Conversely, if McCarthy calls out the crazy wing of the R House caucus, he’ll be out of his Speaker’s job overnight. Ditto were McConnell to take on the crazy wing of the R Senate caucus. By carefully and oh so gently poaching in each other’s garden, they both avoid actual effective backlash while sounding at least vaguely responsible and statesmanlike.
Like so much else from recent R leadership, it’s the very antithesis of profiles in courage. It’s cynically motivated cowardly weaseling.
It isn’t the right thing. It’s a cynical ploy carefully calibrated to look like the right thing while actually being no-thing. Don’t fall for the smile from the wolf in a sheepsuit.
Agreed - he’s not doing the right thing. Let’s not forget that it’s McConnell’s obstructionist tactics that broke the senate. He danced around the subject of election fraud for weeks, and when the electoral college finally delivered a result, his only words were that the Electoral College had spoken, not that voters had spoken.
McConnell is reckoning with the fact that the party is hemorrhaging educated republican voters in suburbs, which make competing in the marketplace of ideas an increasingly insurmountable challenge if it continues down the road of QAnon. On the other hand, the reality is that they’ve been reaching out to QAnon/Tea Party/MAGA voters for years and they’re now an unshakable albatross.
McConnell is trying to see how the party can sort out its internal divide while he still has some influence over the party, knowing fully well that his time might be cut short soon. He’s trying not to provoke a rebellion from either side at this point.
If you think this is true (and I have no opinion either way) what else would you expect them to do that would end in a better result? If they take on their own chamber then they get replaced by someone who won’t; that someone would be less likely to mention the whackos in the other chamber.
If they really are likely to be replaced then the best chance for a good outcome is that they continue to publicly chastise the other chamber while privately putting pressure in their own.
There’s also how Mitch already having been Majority Leader and achieved results at least puts him in a position to ride into the sunset if he finally concludes he can’t prevent a hard crash and a war of the factions. McCarthy OTOH could see his goal to one day be the Speaker threatened if the Batshit Insane face off with the Just Despicable as the power to be appeased in his caucus, and by the nature of the two chambers’ election design this could happen damn faster in the House than he may be able to handle.
I don’t think it’s that simple. It was less that two years ago that McCarthy stripped Steve King of his committee assignments over his comments questioning why “white supremacy” was a bad thing, and the whole Republican caucus shrugged. McCarthy could do the same to Greene and he’d be OK.
The issue is that there is no real divide in GOP, its too lopsided to call it a divide, what you have is the majority are Trumpists and even more extreme, what little remains is largely the bones of the tea party, and as for Republicans - well they are just mere objects of curiosity of a bygone age.
The wrong thing would be for the folks following along at home to give them any credit for it. If they’re in a universe where they can’t remain in power without giving a home to the far-right, they should be treated as what they are, leaders of a far-right party, and not given credit for moderation or restraint.
The only thing creepier than a picture of Mitch McConnell is a picture of Mitch McConnell smiling. Or whatever that expression is that he thinks mimics a human smile.
Some companies have dropped contributions. Will the actions of the Republican party also cause wealthy Americans to leave the Republican party? They would need some other party to keep them paying low taxes.
