I am now relaxing with a glass of Connemara and some classical guitar music. It’s very nice, especially considering how damn stressed I’ve been over the last few days.
It’s smoky and peaty and peppery with a wonderful sweet finish. My current bottle is very nearly gone and it’s lasted me months. Makes me sad, especially since the stuff is $50 a bottle around here. Definitely a special occasion whiskey, in my opinion, as I can’t afford to buy the stuff constantly. Maybe I’ll get some Tyrconnell next time; it’s nearly as good and a good deal less expensive.
Roughly two more hours until I go to bed. Relaxing is fun. How do you relax after a singularly lousy day?
Much the same way. If a bottle is lasting you that long, $50 doesn’t sound excessive. Connemara is a beautiful thing, indeed, but if it helps you take a load off and brings you so much peace that you’re posting about it $50 sounds like a bargain.
Wasn’t that long ago it was nigh on impossible to come by except by duty-free, carry-on, or internet ordering. Smelling the aroma of peat brings back fun memories.
But not everyone thinks so. I broke out my special bottle one night when my wife’s best friend was over for them all to try. My wife refused on principal, but her friend took a sip and then proclaimed loudly, ‘That tastes like Dirt!’ I took her glass and replied, ‘I don’t know where your tongue has been, but thats Peat.’
Haha. It’s definitely an acquired taste, as good whiskey is. I just played HL2 deathmatch for an hour and between that, the whiskey, and the classical guitar, I’m feeling much more relaxed.
I also managed to get a favorite liquor store in Northern Maryland to hold a bottle of Tyrconnell for me until Saturday, so that’s good too.
I also agree with Cluricaun, I was able to make that bottle last a good while, but there were other whiskies in between. It was for special occasions and especially bad days.
Oh I can dig that. My brother got me a sublime bottle of Scotch for Christmas that I had up until two weeks ago. There were plenty of other bottles in between, but every brown liquor man has to keep a nice bottle on hand for special occaisions or really shitty days. Next up I’m going to get another bottle of Bushmills 15yr old. That stuff is unbelieveable.
Well food and beverages are such personal taste items (hence **Count Blucher’s ** whiskey tasting story upthread), but yes, yes it is. I’m not knocking 10 year Bushmills, oh no, if you and I had a bottle to share you’d accuse me of hogging it.
But the 15 was a limited release for the millenium and it has really powerful wood and floral notes, especially vanilla and apple tastes combined with that smokey oak flavor. It’s like a 500 horsepower chardonnay. It’s crisp and bites but still lingers a bit on the palate. The first time I had it I was in more of a Powers mood and found it a bit off, but I ended up with a bottle for that Valentines day and I’ve gone through three or four bottles a year since then. It’s really something special, it’s a curl up with book or relax with a Cohiba kind of a thing. Absolute top notch craft whiskey and worth every red cent.
It is, because the 15 was aged in sherry casks so it picks up those nice sherry notes. Rare? Probably getting there as I know I’ve put my own personal dent in the supply, but I have a crackerjack liquor store down the street where I’m known and I can get things from them a little easier (it helps to spend a decent four figures a year in their establishment) and they have a reserve case or two in the back. I’ve been getting it for $120 a bottle, which seems insane, but again, I’m not mixing it with Coke and slugging it down at frat parties either. That’s what God gave us Evan Williams for.
Some things in life are worth what they cost. Booze is one of them, shoes are another. IMHO being a grown man can be trying at times, but there are some things that make being one a rewarding experiance and stepping up to the big leagues in scotch and whiskey is certainly one of them. This same store has a bottle of 1951 Knappogue Castle listed at $1800 that I’d like to own one day, but that day might never come…
Then again if I ever meet up with **Silenus ** it might just be the order of the day.
