Conputer Question..transferring files

Hi folks,

I have a quite complicating dilema I need help with. Ok, I’m a bit confused myself so I’ll explain the best I can.

I’ve been using this sony computer (windows Me) for a while now. I recently bought a new toshiba computer (windows XP) and now I:m trying to find a way were I can transfer some of the files from one computer to another. The reason being is that my old computer doesn’t have a burner while my new one does. I want to transfer the files to my new computer which has a burner so I could backup the files. confusing?

The only way I can think of is I guess forwarding EACH of the letters I’ve gotten w/the old computer to myself and then opening it with the new computer and get the files like that. But…that’s a pain in the butt!!! Is there any easier way of transferring files from one computer to another!?

Appriciate your help ladies and gents!

Just network them together. If both laptops have Ethernet jacks on them, it’s a simple matter of getting an Ethernet crossover cable and connecting them together. More infor and instructions here.

Laptops? There’s no mention of laptops.

if you can take the harddrive out of the old one and connect it to the new one, just swap files that way.

Huh…I’d have sworn it said laptops. In any case, it works for desktops with NICs too.

  1. How big are these files? Can you just put them onto floppies?

  2. If you have an Internet connection on both, you can upload from the Sony and then download to the Toshiba. One way is simply be emailing them. Another way is via a temporary storage space, such as Yahoo’s “briefcase”, which lets you have 25 mb for free specifically for these sort of situations. If it is a pain to do many files one at a time, use WinZip to package a whole folder into a single file, upload, download, and then UnZip it back to being a folder again.

It is a laptop! You’ve read my mind !

Thanks for all the response. I did read through all of it but ran into problems with most of em’. Like ethernet…one has em’, other doesn’t. As for floppies, the files are too big and besides, the new computer doesn’t come with one anymore :frowning:

I guess that leaves me with using the briefcase like the one in yahoo. Its a pain in the butt because there is a lot I want to transfer but I guess that would do. Is there another way of storing more than 25mb (like yahoo briefcase) online for free if possible?

Thanks for all your help!

uhhh…

and also, how do you use briefcase? gives me a choose folder first error thing…I’m a klutz…ugh

Im gonna assume that you have a network (one or more computers hooked up to a router is basically was im talking about). Easiest way to do it would be by connection both computers to the network and giving each permission to add files. From there, you can just drag and drop.

If they arent on the same network, im gonna assume that they both have a way they can connect to the internet seperately. If so, you can run an ftp server on whichever computer you would like to, and transfer the files directly.

basic FTP server -> http://www.gene6.com/

basic FTP client -> http://www.cuteftp.com/

Should be easy to use if you have a basic grasp on ummmm… computers.

For about $20 you can buy a USB network cable. Just plug it into the USB ports of both computers, load the drivers, and you have them networked.

If they are text files, as you said, zip them up & they should be pretty small, even 25megs of text files can be compressed to about 5 megs then you can email it & store it online if you want.

Good answer, I was going to suggest that. And isn`t USB backwards compatible if the new machine has 2.0 and the old one has 1.0.??

If one of the machines lacks USB, just network them via via the serial/parallel port. I have done this and can tell you it is relatively a no-brainer.
