Conquering is out of style, lets buy more land!

From the Texan secession thread…

I’ve always envisioned this the other way around. Mexico is broke, the US is not. Maybe we should start talks with the Mexican Government about buying up some underpopulated areas of the country contiguous with ours. The Baja peninsula looks nice.

If we paid for a modern home to be constructed for all of the Baja residents in another part of Mexico, forgave Mexico’s debt to us and paid what they owed to the IMF, maybe we could pull it off. Demolish anything not of historical or cultural value and have a good old fashioned government land sale. Seems to me that alone would bring a profit. What US buyers would pay for land now part of the US and with US amenities and services coming should far exceed fair market value as it exists now, right?

Maybe (getting really crazy here) we could offer the Baja to the Jewish People having a similar climate as Israel and less, well, you know, people trying to kill them. Yes, I’m aware of most of the myriad reasons this is a ridiculous idea and No, of course I’m not trying to offend anyone… except the people who want to kill all the Jews… to hell with them.

Well, we are flush with ready cash right now with nothing better to spend it on. Why not?

Well, we did try this before with the Gadsden Purchase, seemed to work out OK.
We didn’t try to turn it into the new promised land, though, so that part of your plan may be shaky, what with 1000s of years of religious history in the Holy Land and whatnot…

We might have to relocate some of those awesome fences we put up. That would cost a fortune.

In theory it would work, in actuality it would be a huge giveaway to land companies as “sales” like that are rarely at true market value.

Your idea has merit, though it would probably never happen.

I’ve had a similiar idea for the Jewish people for decades now, except I figured a chunk of Australia would be the place to go.

Nope. We’ve grown used to it here. We’ve also invested quite a lot in it, built the place up a bit.

Now, if you want to give the *Palestinians *a new homeland, we won’t object.

The way we see it, the Jews don’t have a problem - the rest of the world does.

True enough, but think how much better the new neighbors would be

Heh, I was expecting this OP to be about about a massive polder program. But I don’t really see what the US needs with more land - the one its got is far from being used to capacity.

Build’em some polders in the Med !

I like Baja, but seriously – is there any way to maintain Tijuana as a Mexican exclave? Who the hell wants Tijuana?

The wrecking ball wants TJ. I say we buy everything west of (whats left of) the Colorado River. Flatten that ugly city and turn it into a model GREEN city of energy indepedence, mass transit, effective vehicular transportation and, you know… trees.

But the fences were put up to keep the people out that would now be in…

Hmmm. Solution to fence problem: annex Mexico.

When I suggested annexing Mexico and making the population US citizens, various posters here had a fit, with a bunch of posts about invasion, and second class citizens, etc. I wasn’t really serious, but jeez! I didn’t say anything about armed invasion, you can annex territory without that, and if Mexican citizens were made US cititzens, I meant just that, with full rights and resposibilities
