Conservative Dopers- would this bother you?

Most people with facial piercings and tattoos have probably been to jail. So, they’re guilty of something.

I’m making it up. Everyone goes to the same banks I do. Everyone where I live and works at the same city and company. I lied. All of my bank tellers have tattoos on their faces. If you’re nice to them, they sell you drugs at the back of the bank.

Yes, it most definitely is. The only reason not to try to convince the guy of his ignorance on the matter is that you think he’s stuck that way. As a fourteen year old, he most definitely is not. At least, I’m not giving up on him. I know people who at his age said the exact same thing–albeit behind people’s backs rather than to their faces.

Oh, and contrary to what many people here would have you believe, his belief is quite common. That’s the reason this thread exists. His rationale is precisely the reason some people give. Compare that with this real conservative Christian video (with modern critique) about the dangers of rock music.

Qin’s hardly the stupidest poster on this board. I feel his worst problem is that he lacks experience. I think in many cases he’s only been exposed to one side of an issue and he’s accepted that viewpoint without hearing the other side.

The fact that he, and the other regular conservatives here, are willing to come to this board speaks well of them. They’re willing to explore a predominantly liberal viewpoint. The willfully ignorant conservatives are the ones who stick to “friendly” boards where everyone agrees with their views and nobody ever challenges them.

Wow, thanks everybody! And I do mean everybody.

It’ll probably be a “sparkly zit” stud, even though I hear that a small ring would be easier to take care of. No big cow ring through the middle, either- I already have a deviated septum and have no desire to hang anything from it!

So, do the Hindus & Buddhists around here think that all the comments about nose piercing being stupid, ugly, attention-whoring, immature or indicative of low social status make the baby Jesus cry?

Enlightening thread, as usual.

In terms of taking care of it, the ring and the stud are much of a munchness. Nose studs have a bent end, so you’ve not just got a spike of metal jamming into the inside of your nose, and the bend end lies up in the inside of your nostril, which keeps it secure. Rings are good because you can turn them, which helps in the healing stage to make sure it doesn’t heal over, but my stud didn’t heal over because I gently moved it every few days while I was cleaning it.

I’ve always been under the impression that Hindus and Buddhists aren’t too worried about the baby Jesus

Did it.

Hurt a bit more than I expected, plus there was that weird sensation of something going THROUGH my nostril, but all in all it was fine. Piercer was lovely and a real pro. I went with a stud, the middle size that she had for initial piercings. I will actually probably switch to the smaller one soon. The position is a smidge toward the middle of my nose, rather than down in the “crease”- it’s where I see most Indian women’s piercings, so it would accommodate a more ornate stud. It stopped hurting within a day, and already feels like I’ve had it for years.

Reaction has been 100% positive so far- in fact, a lot of people just assumed I had already had the piercing and just hadn’t been wearing the jewelry. My most conservative Catholic friend loved it, so go figure.

Well, sure. But you’re asking the wrong questions. They’re basically textbook “how to lie with statistics” questions that effectively boil down to “most people don’t have tattoos or piercings” and “most people are good people”, which aren’t really in much dispute.

The important question is “does having a piercing or tattoo correlate with being the sort of antisocial/unemployable/does-not-play-well-with-others person that most people would like to avoid”. That’s the question that our brains are trying to answer very quickly by making use of stereotypes. Obviously it’s a complex question, and people are individuals that can’t be adequately summed up by their fashion choices, but that’s what we do anyway.

Of course, there’s also signaling value in the other direction. If you want a nose stud, you’re probably not going to be compatible with people who blanche at the thought, so you’re saving yourself a lot of time in not having to bother with them in the first place.

Jesus doesn’t like piercings.

The only part the would bother me is the loud “ping!” and subsequent floor search every time you sneezed.

After several of these comments, I just want to mention that septum rings, if you wear something that’s open like a circular barbell, are much easier to hide than a stud through one side. It just tucks up into my nose when I have to go down to the big boss’s side of the building and you’d never know it was there. After 14 years of having it, I barely even feel it in there. I also do that if little kids are staring at it - their eyes go all wide and they try to figure out how I made it disappear. Gives me a laugh.

I don’t really consider myself Hindu anymore, but I’m still Indian and definitely not Christian. I answered up above - sometimes I just feel like I’m being drowned in a white Christian culture. Most of the time I don’t mind but I am so Americanized myself, in accent and dress, demeanor and morals, that I want to have some reminder of my roots. Hence the nose piercing and the tattoo. And no, I don’t really care what people think of it. I made my choices and I can’t help people who think “small tatoo and nose ring” is the same as “full back tattoo of a naked man”.

One time, when I was in college, I sneezed during Intro to the Bible class, and my nose stud flew out and hit the blackboard, missing the professor’s face by inches. He was not amused.

Thus, I have used one with a bend ever since.

I’ve had mine pierced on and off for 15 years, since age 18. No issues with my job. There is a very conservative business casual dress code policy, and facial piercings are prohibited, but that’s what clear retainers are for, and I mostly work at home anyway. I forgot the retainer the last couple times I was on site, though, and nobody said anything. But if I’d worn capris or forgotten socks, I would have been in big trouble!

Mine has nothing to do with rebellion, I just like how it looks.

I hear Hitler had some crazy-rebellious piercings.

Nope, not a bit.

Provided the kid himself was cool, sure.
I can’t imagine being bothered by something like that.

Ahahaha, I’d forgotten that piercings and tattoos are one of the hot-button issues here.

Maybe you could get a two-for-one circumcision or cat-declawing special along with the nose piercing.

See, it pays to be honest, because if you lie you’ll get caught in the end.

The real question is, how does the child of a woman with a nose piercing rebel against authority? Is he going to watch tennis while listening to Baroque music?

QFT.

Horrors!

I’ve heard many of these objections (in this thread, not just this post) raised against beeing seen in public with a “colored” friend, duck’s arse haircuts, bikinis, wide ties, high hemlines, low waistlines, bluejeans, The Twist, bell bottom pants,*Rock-and-flippin’ roll fer crissakes *(), and a host of other inconsequential things besides. Any unfamiliar behavior exhibited by “younger folks” is seen as rebellion and labeled “uncivilized” until enough (never all) of the Fogeys wise up and realize it’s not all that important (or until they die off).
