All it would take is one person getting infected and the snowball (Ha! in Hawaii) will start rolling!

Ooh, so there’s hope for me!

I’ll probably just fantasize about it. But it wasn’t the beaches or the ocean that attracted me, it was the people. The diverse, warm people. Even the Hawaiian teen who was obviously trying to scam me was decent about it.

I mean, people are people. I’m sure Hawaii has its share of assholes. But the culture seemed so very not-asshole.

I’m sorry to learn the schools suck. My kids are grown, and that wouldn’t be a direct problem for us. But it’s a problem for the islands.

Thanks Sam. Really helpful.

In truth we’re pretty quiet and simple people.
We’re trying to ride out COVID in good isolation and just wanting to make sure our 8 yo has a decent outdoor space and some other kids around to play with.
I don’t need much, I can happily spend a year going on bike rides, reading, sitting at the beach, and having family time. I mean, it’s not ideal, but then again, neither is getting COVID. So, stay home, chill out, and wait for the vaccine.

As indicated upthread (which I imagine shocked some folks) we’re already inured to high costs coming from NYC and thankfully have had the good fortune to be able to afford to live kind of wherever we want.

Thanks again for the helpful info! Seems like the biggest concern I’m hearing on this thread are people saying we won’t be welcomed / resenting us for coming there. As long as they don’t take it out on our 8 yr old at school, I can deal with that.

That’s very kind of you to say - I’m honored.

Years ago there was a story about someone who absent-mindedly left their wallet on a chair at the airport in Honolulu - realizing in horror what they had done, they rushed back hoping against hope that the wallet would still be where they left it.

The wallet was still there but everything had been taken. Well, ALMOST everything - the thief left a little money behind so at least the victim would be able to grab something to eat while dealing with the theft.

I don’t remember where I heard that story or whether it’s even true, but I’d like to think that it is.

*Sigh" “Windward.” I meant the Windward Coast, not the Leeward. Leeward is the other, western side of the island.
