I don’t have a copy of 777 anymore, WeRSauron, but are you speaking of a Quabalistic Gematria equivalence?
Couldn’t find anything to give all the equivalences, but I’m guessing 770=Lucifer, or morning star, Like my favorite 23 means Light, Life, and ‘a thread’?
This is, honestly, the closest anyone is ever going to get, so I’ll just spill the beans.
At some point in its history, the Hermetic Order of the Morning Star, International, determined that the addition of the gematria values of the letters of the words “Love, Truth, Knowledge” according to their Hebrew equivalents add up to seven hundred and seventy (770). (This had since been found to be inaccurate.) Since then, “770” had been used by members of the Order to sign off or say goodbye, online and in real life, on an unofficial level but certainly so pervasive that it was de facto official. Greetings would often be “Lux” or “Ave” or something along those lines, although using “770” was not unknown. By the way, “770” was pronounced, “seven seventy.”
HOMSI above is a somewhat controvertial organization in the Western Mystery Tradition; the WMT encompasses, basically, the Golden Dawn movement (of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn founded by S. L. Mac Gregor Mathers). The activities of HOMSI’s highest members have been deemed criminal, cultish, exploitative, and misleading by many; every few years there’d be an exodus of members as activities come to light. Many left because of what they deemed to be significant departures from the true rituals and meaning of the original Golden Dawn. (One example was an important ritual into which HOMSI introduced a cut on the clavicle as one pledged loyalty to the Order’s leadership. This bloodletting was considered highly inappropriate by many.) I left in 2002 during one such exodus (influenced especially by the exit of a very popular high-ranking member who was my first proctor or teacher/supervisor). In occult/Western Mystery Tradition circles, using “770” as a greeting or salutation automatically and instantly brands one a member of HOMSI as only HOMSI uses it so widely.
In short, “770” in the parlance of HOMSI means “Love, Truth, Knowledge.”
Wow! And here I was going to post about 770 being the frequency of what was once thought of as The Greatest Top Forty Radio Station of All Time WABC, the 50,000 watt clear channel giant once home to “Cousin” Bruce Morrow, Dan Ingram and other broadcast greats.
I think I should get partial credit for my Urantia guess. I believe there are 770 planets in their galactic federation. That’s what I got out of my googling anyway. I am not plowing through their dense tomes to confirm this.
Urantia is a UFO cult, BTW. I thought Cecil did a column on them but a search turns up nothing.
Sorry, WeRSauron, it truly is a geek thing. In Unix, numbers are used to represent the permissions given a file or directory. 770 would mean that the owner and anyone in their group can do anything they want to the file (read, write, execute) and nobody outside the group can do anything with it. So when I want to lock down a file so that John Q. User can’t get to it, I sometimes use this command:
Khabs am Pehkt, indeed! I can see where that would be offputting. I have been involved with some offputting offshoots of G.D. myself. The head of our local temple was told to F*** off by Dr. Hyatt, himself.
Have you read ‘Rebels and Devils’? There’s a story about the place in that tome of latter day hermetics.
