Really makes me miss the Straight Dope Science Advisory Board.
Columbus, Ohio:
For Fuck’s Sake, do cops get any credible training at all?
This after she had just regained consciousness after a freaking seizure!
A fifth officer arrived – armed with a Taser. He warned her he would use it if she didn’t settle down and behave. She cursed at him. He pressed the Taser into her abdomen and pulled the trigger. Her body jerked. She screeched in pain.
Denver cop fired for letting a guy bleed to death on the street without trying to get him medical aid.
…shot a man in Denver…just to watch him die…
Officer Cash.
From the Greeley Tribune article linked in the Daily Beast piece:
The day Rodgers was fired for his inaction that day in 2020 he was simultaneously fired for not complying with the city’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate, records show.
Ah. Got it.
If we didn’t know what/who we were dealing with before …
False arrest…5700 miles outside their jurisdiction!
It happened in Marseille, where LAPD Chief Michel Moore and Assistant Chief Robert Marino were walking the streets after dinner with their wives, along with two LAPD officers as security detail.
Security detail?
The sheriff we fired a few years back, Arpaio, had a security detail because (he said) a lot of the people he’d thrown in jail as America’s Toughest Sheriff™ wanted to kill him. The only plot that showed up was a phony one cooked up by deputies who even bought the parts for a bomb and delivered them to the man they accused.
A followup to the LAPD chief is the case of the chief of police of Loving, New Mexico, who not only tried to arrest a guy in Carlsbad, not in his jurisdiction, but also tased him. The chief has a long history of bad interactions with the public.
It’s how you reward the rank and file - free trip to France.
The LAPD Chief and Assistant Chief were in Marseille on official business. Apparently, the officers who stopped the man were also there on official business. They were also walking with local police.
In some ways, that makes the incident stranger, but in other ways it helps explain it. They didn’t just randomly arrest somebody while on vacation, they were ‘on duty’ in some capacity, so when one of the people in their party accused a passerby of theft, it actually makes sense they would leap into action.
No it doesn’t. It makes sense the French police officers leap into action. The Americans should sit the fuck down.
I think this might be paywalled, the poor man was pepper sprayed at least 40 times while locked in a cell.
"Day after day, after day, Rahim Muhammad slammed his head into the prison cell door. Incarcerated at the Eyman state prison in Florence and diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, Muhammad heard voices that told him to harm himself. But instead of providing counseling or a mental health treatment plan to stop the self-harming behavior, Arizona prison staff repeatedly gassed Muhammad with pepper spray — day after day. "
A Kentucky county sheriff, who was also a girls’ assistant basketball coach, has been arrested by his own officers for punching a girl in the face during a basketball game.
On court melee and, acting as the assistant coach, he jumped in. He’s been charged with assault in the 4th degree, which looks like a misdemeanor and fine for $500. Not sure this should be considered in this thread.

- Assault in the 4th Degree – In Kentucky, assault in the 4th degree is a misdemeanor offense resulting from an assault that results in minimal injury to the alleged victim. An individual can recklessly cause physical injury to another person by means of a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument and still be culpable for this offense. Assault in the 4th degree in Kentucky is punishable by a maximum fine of $500 and up to 12 months in jail. If the assault is committed during an extreme emotional disturbance the maximum fine is $250 and not more than 90 days in jail. Likewise, the penalty can be increased in circumstances where an individual has three or more convictions for assault in the fourth degree against a family member or other person with whom there was an unmarried relationship within five years. There is no requirement that the victims be the same individuals under Kentucky law. In such instances, the penalty may be increased to a felony with a maximum fine of $10,000 not less than $1,000 and not more than 5 years in prison and not less than 1 year in prison.
How did he die?
Another County Sheriff going all Clint “stay off my lawn” Eastwood on people.
