Controversial encounters between law-enforcement and civilians - the omnibus thread #2

Pence went to Philadelphia to meet with the Philadelphia police union. Afterwards, there was a private drinking party at the police union’s members only bar in their union headquarters. Members of the Proud Boys, wearing their insignia, mingled with the cops even though it was supposedly a members only party. Reporters were at the event, and they were trying to ask the Proud Boys why they were there, but police in uniform asked the Proud Boys if they were having problems with the reporters and demanded to see the reporters’ credentials…

One of the Wilmington cops who got fired over racist comments is demanding reinstatement on the grounds that his racist comments are protected by freedom of religion.

Hear a lot is going on in Portland right now, with at least one death, IIRC. I’ve seen skepticism on social media that the troops there are actual recognized federal officers, and not just that mercenary group that Trump brought up to DC earlier. The governor has condemned their actions, but it doesn’t look like there’s a legal way to remove them, so who knows what’s going to happen, especially since it seems that the nation’s general attention has shifted away. (But that just makes the protestors remaining all the more remarkable, IMO.)

Well, I’m shocked, SHOCKED I tell you! It’s almost as if the racist shitbag cadre of police officers has been public knowledge for almost 30 fucking years already. “Some of those that work forces are the same that burn crosses” and all, ya know? Sheeeeeeit, don’t even get me started on the live version…

Arkansas cop who threatened to shoot any protesters who came to his door is in jail for shooting a fellow cop who came to his door,

This is just unbelievably sad. Where are all the cops and ex-cops on this board that stand against shit like this? There are so many videos and tweets and Facebook posts against people who are rebelling against treatment such as this, but where are all the “good cops” videos and tweets that say “This is not who we are”?

You don’t get it. Sometimes you have to make people lick urinals and shoot coworkers through closed doors, otherwise ANARCHY reigns!

Maybe I have to walk a mile in their shoes before I can criticize cops making a guy lick a urinal.

Here’s a homeless guy not exhibiting proper respect. So, the cop punches him repeatedly in the face. Then, the homeless guy is charged with assault, because of swelling in the cop’s hand. He was also pepper sprayed while lying on the subway platform. Fun!

Yesterday, Lafayette Park. Today, Portland. Tomorrow…

On the plus side, the South Carolina Supreme Court has put a temporary ban on no-knock warrants:

NYPD union leader does an interview with Fox News with his QAnon mug prominently displayed in the background.

That placement of the mug is not an accident - its there to send a message.

In the UK if you are involved with certain government functions - such as prisons, police or law you cannot continue to hold your post and remain a member of a racist organisation.

In the UK he would be suspended very quickly, and an internal investigation would then take place.
Our civil service standards do not require just proof of supporting such an organisation, the evidence level is on ‘balance of probabilities’ however it goes somewhat further.

Not only are civil servants required to abide by certain rules, even if no direct proof is found, they are required to be SEEN to be following the rules - in other words public perception and confidence is key.

The seniority level of the staff member is also important, the higher the seniority the more stringent the rules simply because they are expected to self evaluate having been promoted on that basis.

US police and public sector really needs a proper look and reform, far too much political patronage in US public sector whereas in the UK the civil servant is required to be seen as neutral to the political office holders.

Do prosecutors count? Iowa prosecutor says he doesn’t have time to provide police body camera footage and other evidence to the lawyers of a reporter whom he is trying to prosecute after being arrested at a protest.

Man, the roots of fascism took hold quickly.

Detroit cop charged with felony assault for firing rubber bullets at journalists.

The rootlets take hold first.

Noun. 1. rootlet - small root or division of a root.
