You’ll have to ask them.
That may have been before everybody had video cameras on them. That’s the brave new world, cops can no longer ignore the rules of civilized behavior, confident that it it’s the citizen’s word vs. theirs, that they would triumph. With cameras comes scrutiny and accountability, and that’s a good thing.
It also brings kneejerk emotional responses based on visceral distaste instead of facts and logic, which is why this officer is being thrown under the bus.
Whole lotta not putting up with that shit anymore going around;
Perhaps if Officer Hothead had used a bit of restraint he’d still be employed. Cops should act as though they’re always on network television.
Sure, let’s set law enforcement standards the same way we pick American Idol winners. Who needs education, experience, results, or facts when the mob always knows what’s best?
They should remember who they work for.
The mob doesn’t have the power to fire cops, but when their superiors see video like this, the powers that be rightfully feel pressure to do the right thing.
You confuse “the popular thing” with “the right thing”.
Who decides the difference?
The powers that be ultimately answer to the people. If they, by refusing to discipline or fire cops who, in the opinion of a great majority of the people are being excessively violent, then those powers that be might find themselves on the short end of the electoral stick. Most people look at that schoolroom video and are appalled by the cop’s actions. That doesn’t make the student a choir girl but most neutral observers would agree the cop was way out of line. If the powers that be want to ignore that, it is at their own peril.
Well, the officer was fired, now the only question remaining is whether or not the dumb bitch learned she doesn’t have the right to interrupt those who are actually trying to get an education. She didn’t deserve that treatment, but she certainly doesn’t deserve a public education if she can’t, at the very least, not disrupt those who want to learn
If the teacher and administrator really couldn’t remove her from the room, then yes–a disruptive student does need to be forcibly removed at some point. Back in my day the burly male teachers (who usually were also the football or wrestling coaches) would’ve probably lifted her out of the desk and carried her out. What I doubt they would’ve done is pull a student backwards while she’s holding onto a desk, causing the desk to slam violently into the ground and putting her at risk of neck/back injuries.
I’d like to see teachers and administrators move children out of rooms in the rare scenario like this, because historically they’ve been able to do that. But I can understand in 2015, maybe it’s just not feasible legally for teachers to do those kinds of things any longer, so maybe a school resource officer in this day and age is required to do this kind of work. However when they do so, they need to remember they’re in a school, not a prison and not the street. I have 0% doubt I could’ve removed that small female student from her desk with much less than the level of force involved in this incident, so I feel a trained man 25-30 years younger than me should be able to do the same.
It is exactly this kind of civility and reasonableness that cannot be tolerated! What kind of decent, human example does this show to our children?
Sounds like the kid was recently orphaned, and is living in foster care.
Even her own parents don’t want anything to do with her.
Shocked I tell you…
The payday that she gets out of this will last a whole month before she’s right back on track for a life of food stamps and probation violation hearings…
… or she’s a troubled kid that may have a chance to lead a productive life.
But by all means, don’t miss the chance to slander another non-white child. Otherwise we might have a non-white child out there that hasn’t been slandered, and we can’t have that.
Mods, a little coup de grâce here, maybe? Pretty please?
Has anyone else noticed that the racists have established a not insignificant foothold here on the SD in the past couple of years?
It’s that bias we have against Angry Conservatives.
